FCI Florence is a men’s medium-security Federal Correctional Institute in Florence, Colorado about 40 miles south of Colorado Springs. There is an adjacent minimum-security camp at this facility. This facility can hold over 1,000 inmates. It operates within the North Central Region of the Bureau of Prisons department.

Inmates incarcerated at FCI Florence are housed in two-person cells in one of the eight housing units. Each unit has a director that the inmates report to, this director also organizes programs and events for inmates. The unit director and the rest of the staff also keep inmates safe while encouraging them to take advantage of the different educational and recreational options offered at the penitentiary.

The co-founder of Absolute Poker, Brent Beckley, was held at the minimum-security camp while he was incarcerated for internet gambling and bank and wire fraud. FCI Florence also once held Francisco Duran, a man who attempted to assassinate former President Clinton.

Visiting Hours and Rules

All visiting at FCI Florence is currently suspended until further notice.

During regular visiting times to this facility, the visiting hours are on Saturdays, Sundays, and Federal Holidays from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. FCI Florence will not begin processing any visitors before 7:45 am and after 2:00 pm.

Inmates and visitors have to arrange their visitation times starting with visitors getting approval for visiting. This process begins when the inmate lists potential visitors when they’re first processed at the facility. All visitors have to be approved and undergo a background check.

All visitors have to arrive at FCI Florence dressed appropriately with no hoodies, plunging necklines, or short skirts. Both parties have to behave appropriately during the visit as well or else the visitation may be cut short.

Visitation can also end due to an emergency or overcrowding in the visitor’s room. Each inmate can have up to five visitors at a time, children under the age of 15 are not counted in this number. The visiting room can only hold 140 people at a time. If more people are in the room, some groups will be told to terminate their visitation.

Contact With Inmates

Inmates and their loved ones are encouraged to stay in contact with each other while an inmate is incarcerated. Contact of any kind, from visitations to letters, can help inmates stay connected to their communities and make their eventual transition to release smoother.

Contact Through Letter Writing

Inmates can communicate with friends and family by sending and receiving letters. To write to an inmate at FCI Florence or the adjacent camp, do not send a letter to the prison. Instead, you will need to use the following address and format

INMATE NAME & REGISTER NUMBER
FCI FLORENCE
FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE
PO BOX 6000
FLORENCE, CO 81226

To send a letter to an inmate at the camp, use the following address and format to ensure that the inmate receives it

INMATE NAME & REGISTER NUMBER
FCI FLORENCE
FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE
SATELLITE CAMP
PO BOX 5000
FLORENCE, CO 81226

All letters are monitored by the staff. Before an inmate receives a letter, it’s opened and read to ensure that nothing illegal is being discussed and no contraband is being smuggled in. Photos can be sent but they cannot depict nudity or sexual acts.

Contact Through Phone Calls

Being able to talk to a loved one is very important, that’s why inmates at FCI Florence can make phone calls to friends and family. Phone calls have to be made on the phone system provided by the prison facilities so they can be monitored correctly. In some circumstances, inmates can be approved for an unmonitored phone conversation with a lawyer.

Contact Through Emails

Inmates can take advantage of new technology and send and receive emails through the TRULINCS system. This system also allows inmates to print out emails and other online documents in a closed internet system. This service is paid for by the inmates through profits from the commissary and directly.

To send and receive emails, both the inmate and the potential correspondent have to be approved and agree to have their emails monitored. People can only send text emails and are limited to 13,000 characters per message.

Inmate Search Procedures

At FCI Florence inmates are subject to being searched to maintain the security of the facility and to ensure that no contraband is in the prison. Inmate searches are to be expected when incarcerated. Inmates have to carry their commissary identification with them at all times, lost cards can be replaced through the unit leader.

Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited at FCI Florence. An inmate search may be conducted to ensure that an inmate does not have any alcohol or drugs on them and is not taking them. Random drug and alcohol tests are to be expected to ensure that rules are being followed.

There are three kinds of inmate searches that can be conducted on an inmate’s person. Pat down searches are the simplest kind of search and are done when the inmate is against a wall. Strip or visual searches are done with a staff of the same sex. Medical digital searches can only be done with the approval of the FCI Florence warden.

An inmate search is not strictly a search of an inmate. Searches can also be conducted in the cell where the inmate sleeps and resides. Inmates do not have to be present when the search is conducted.

Inmate searches help keep the penitentiary safe and prevent riots or other dangerous activity from occurring. They also help keep other inmates safe while incarcerated.

What is Contraband?

Contraband is defined as anything that is not issued to an inmate or is not purchased at the commissary. Even approved items can be contraband if an inmate is found to have an item in excess. Inmate searches are conducted to prevent contraband from getting into FCI Florence.

An inmate who is found to have contraband is subject to disciplinary action. This can include loss of communication with a person outside of prison, a loss of privileges, or another form of punishment.

Health Services for Inmates

Inmates are entitled to health care while incarcerated at FCI Florence. When entering the penitentiary inmates undergo a physical evaluation to determine overall health. Inmates can also request a physical examination before their release if they have not had one for a year before their expected release date.

Preventive health examinations are conducted to help inmates detect and prevent potential medical problems. Many medical examinations and visitations require a copay, though this is not applicable for all testing and visits. Inmates without funds can get a waiver for a co-pay if he is deemed to have a serious medical problem.

Inmates at FCI Florence are tested for HIV/AIDS if risk factors are present with the inmate. Testing positive for HIV will not prevent an inmate from working in foodservice. Tuberculous testing is also conducted at the penitentiary.

If an inmate is prescribed medication, they have to pick up that medication at the pill line. At FCI Florence, the pill line is conducted three times a day on weekdays and twice a day on weekends. Pills have to be taken at the pill line and an inmate search may be conducted to ensure that the inmate has taken the medication.

Inmates can also purchase over the counter medication at the commissary. A medical doctor may advise an inmate a specific kind of over the counter medicine to buy or the inmate can purchase independently. These purchases are made with the money that the inmate has in their commissary account.

Eye doctor and dental care are also available at FCI Florence. Eye doctors can prescribe glasses for inmates, contacts are not allowed. Reading glasses can be purchased at the commissary, there are different strength samples to try so the inmate can find the right strength for them.

Inmate Education Services

FCI Florence offers flexible education for inmates to get the education they need. Inmates who take advantage of the education courses offered at this facility are more motivated to reach their goals and find more success in their life after their release.

Inmates who do not have a high school diploma or its equivalency are required to take literacy courses until they pass the GED test. Inmates who do not speak English need to take the English as a second language course until they pass with at least an eighth grade level of understanding and fluency.

After these courses have been completed, inmates have the choice to decide what courses they want to take. Inmates can take occupational and vocational studies to get a certificate, study through continuing adult education courses, or take correspondence courses. Any college class is accredited by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges.

Not all education is through college and certificates. At FCI Florence, inmates can also take courses in social-education life skills, parenting, and career coaching. These courses provide valuable life skills that will help inmates after their release from prison.

Library Services

Inmates are encouraged to use the library for both recreational and legal purposes at FCI Florence. Inmates can check out books to read for fun or use them to continue to develop their education. Any reference books have to stay in the library.

The legal library allows checkouts and typewriters available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Inmates can research their cases and make copies of documents with the copier in the legal library. Inmates must pay for copies and typewriter ribbon through their commissary account.

Inmate Employment Services

After undergoing a physical examination, inmates will be given a job assignment. Inmates are responsible for getting to and completing their job assignments. Many of these assignments offer a salary on a sliding hourly scale. Inmates are assigned a job based on their skills and what the prison needs.

An inmate can apply to work in the UNICOR factory connected to FCI Florence. These factories produce clothing, electronics, and metal for the Federal Government. This system was developed to teach responsibility to inmates and to give them skills and experience that will help them after being released.

Inmates who are given priority to work at UNICOR are limited to those who have previous experience with UNICOR and those who have outstanding civil debts, including court fees and child support payments. Inmates also need to participate in the Inmate Financial Responsibility Program to be eligible for UNICOR.

FCI Florence expects inmates to be financially responsible for their financial obligations. Through the Inmate Financial Responsibility Program, they can receive help from staff to plan for payments and plan for their financial future. This planning can help them with their finances after prison.

Inmate Psychology Services

FCI Florence has a staff psychologist that is responsible for diagnosing and treating inmates. During the first month of an inmate’s stay in the penitentiary, they will undergo a psychological screening that will determine what the inmate needs for their psychological treatment. Specific courses and treatment may be recommended to an inmate after the screening.

Inmates can also receive informal counseling from the unit director. The unit director also conducts group therapy sessions. Inmates can request treatment or a session from psychological services with a request form provided by a staff member. Emergency psychological services are also available when needed.

FCI Florence understands that inmates can enter prison with several psychological needs that have to be addressed. The prison offers sessions on drug education, anger and stress management, and sexual assault prevention. Inmates can participate in Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous and other drug addiction treatment services.

The goal of psychological services at FCI Florence is to help inmates manage their stress while incarcerated and prepare for life after release. People who learn tools to manage their negative emotions are better equipped to lead a successful life. The skills learned in prison can go a long way to helping inmates after prison as they integrate into society.
