USP Florence – High is a high-security federal correctional facility in Colorado. It is located in Fremont County about 90 miles to the south of Denver and is run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons under the United States Department of Justice. It is part of the larger United States Penitentiary, Florence ADMAX, the famous federal supermax correctional facility in Colorado. This facility was built in 1993 and houses about 816 inmates at a go.
USP Florence High occupies around 390020 square feet on a 49 acre stretch of land making it one of the largest federal facilities in the state. The security is beefed up to the maximum on account of the dangerous men held here. Consequently, there is a sizeable perimeter wall, a patrol road, and a seven-guard tower to ensure top-notch security. This prison features departmental structures such as a health service station, educational programs station, laundry area, barbershop, commissary store, a visitation station, chapel, exercise area, and a Special Housing Unit (SHU).
Visitation
Inmates in all federal correctional facilities can receive visitors on approved days under a specified schedule. At USP Florence High, the visitors are allowed into the facility on Saturdays, Sundays, and all recognized federal holidays. The visitation hours are strictly between 8 am and 3 pm and there are no limits to the number of visitors that an inmate can receive each month. However, before you visit an inmate at this facility, you should be aware of the following:
- Only four adults and six children are allowed per visit.
- The visitation at the Special Housing Unit and the Special Management Unit is limited to video conferences. Furthermore, they cannot exceed two hours.
- Physical contact is only allowed at the beginning and the end of the visit.
- You can only bring the following items to the visitation station; one wallet, a small zip lock or change purse bag, a maximum of $20, a comb, heart medication, jewelry that is not excessively worn, and a diaper bag for a baby bottle, clothes, diapers or baby powder.
- Any unauthorized items will be kept at the prison-provided lockers for safekeeping.
Intake and Booking Procedures at USP Florence High
When an inmate is brought to this facility, they are processed and incorporated into the system according to the nature of their crimes and sentences. The intake and settling process entails the following procedures:
- Intake
New inmates are processed accordingly before they are settled in different housing units. The first step is a comprehensive social screening by the Unit Management team followed by a medical and mental health screening by the Medical health Unit. The inmates are then given a copy of the facility’s rules and regulations to get accustomed to the way of things, the dos and don’ts. The copy includes their rights and responsibilities as well as information about sexual assault and abuse. Repercussions of breaking rules are also highlighted in this document.
Within the first 28 days of incarceration, the inmates are required to participate in the Admission and Orientation (A&O) Program. The program comes in handy to help them know and understand the facility’s programs, policies, services, and other procedures.
Classification Teams
After orientation, the inmates will have gotten accustomed to the way of doing things at this facility and the daily routine. They are then classified accordingly into specific housing units. A housing unit is a self-contained inmate living area with housing and unit staff offices. Each housing unit is manned by a respective Unit Team that is responsible for all the inmates living them. The inmates and the unit team members are closely in contact and are accessible to each other. A typical unit team comprises of:

- Correctional Counselor

- Staff Psychologist
- Education Advisor
- Unit Officer
The Unit members come in handy to attend to inmate issues such as parole matters, personal and family issues, release planning, counseling, and assisting inmates to set goals and accomplish them accordingly. The unit staff members are accessible to inmates every day of the week between 7.30 am and 9 pm including weekends and federal holidays.
The senior staff unit members play the following roles:
- The Unit Manager
The Unit Manager is the overall administrative head of the unit. He is responsible for all the unit programs and activities. Furthermore, he chairs the senior team compromising of the Case Manager, the Correctional Counselor, the Education Advisor, and the Psychology staff. He is the overall overseer of the daily operations of his respective unit.
- The Case Manager
The Case Manager is a critical member of the Unit and is responsible for all inmates’ casework. He prepares classification resources, release plans, inmates’ progress reports, correspondence, or any other materials relating to an inmate’s stay at the housing unit level. He also serves the important role of a liaison between an offender, the prison administration, and the community.
- Correctional Counselor
Inmates at federal facilities are offered rehabilitative counseling to better their lives. The correctional counselor comes in handy to guide and counsel inmates in areas of personal difficulties, institutional adjustment, change of attitude, and planning for the future. He greatly influences whatever activities inmates partake. Even better, the counselor organizes and conducts group counseling sessions alongside other counselors from other housing units.
- The Unit Secretary
The Unit Secretary is responsible for all clerical roles in the unit. Moreover, he is included in administrative duties such as preparation of release paperwork and parole documents.
- Unit Officer
The Unit Officers are the engine that runs the daily operations of individual units. These supervise the inmates and enforce the facility’s rules and regulations at the ground level. Moreover, they are responsible for the safety, security, and sanitization of the facility. They are in direct contact with the inmates but maintain professional relationships with them. These officers are further responsible for contraband inspection and the movement of inmates in and out of the units.
Inmate Calls at USP Florence
Inmates at this facility are provided with a nine-digit Phone Access Code (PAC) that enables them to make calls through TRUFONE. Each inmate has his own PAC and is kept confidential and secure. If an inmate loses on compromises his PAC, they will incur a replacement fee. TRULINCS runs the TRUFONE system as contacted by this facility. Calls are only allowed between 6 am and 11.30 pm. However, inmates cannot access the phone during working hours.
TRUFONE calls are limited to 15 minutes and are recorded for security purposes. Each month an inmate can only access 300 minutes of call time but they get an extra 100 hours in November and December.
