Located in Canon City in Colorado, the Centennial Correctional Facility is a state-run correctional facility for offenders. Inmates within the facility are one of eight different levels. The lower the level of the prisoner, the less privileges they are given by the correctional staff. Level one prisoners are given the least amount of privileges.

The custody level of inmates is determined by a number of factors. Length of sentence, criminal history, and seriousness of offense all help determine the custody level of inmates. The goal of this system is to have the lowest recidivism rate possible. The Centennial Correction Facility is dedicated to trying to prepare inmates for re-entry into society, often aiming to put them in a better place than they were upon arrival to the complex.

The jail itself is made up of two wings. The north wing houses mainly the maximum security offenders. The south wing contains prisoners who are in solitary confinement. It is also the counterpart of the nearby Colorado State Penitentiary.

Various incentives are used to try to better the behavior of inmates with behavior problems. If an inmate is eligible, they may be able to take advantage of educational opportunities, receive support for addiction to drugs or alcohol, and even earn their GED. Inmates who are mentally ill receive the best care possible at this facility as well.

Prisoner Lookup

If you believe that a friend or family member has been incarcerated in the Centennial Correctional Facility, you can check use the inmate search function to find them. The Colorado Department of Corrections handles this service.

Upon opening the inmate locator, you will be prompted to provide the last name, first name, or number of the prisoner you are trying to locate. You can attempt a search with just three letters in each of the name fields to try and find your inmate. The inmate locator is here.

If you are unable to locate the inmate that you are looking for through this website, you can also call the Colorado Department of Corrections helpline at 719-226-4880.

Visitation

Currently, visitation is suspended at the Centennial Correction Facility. COVID-19 has temporarily ended visitation for inmates. This decision has not been made lightly. The risk that comes from someone potentially carrying the coronavirus into the correctional facility poses an extreme health risk to all inmates and staff.

In lieu of in-person visit at the jail, the Centennial Correctional Facility is offering its inmates one free five-minute phone call every week to stay in contact with family and friends. If you are an inmate’s legal counsel, you will be permitted to visit in-person, but these visits will be no-contact.

Certain facilities run by the Colorado Department of Corrections are offering video visits at this time. For the most up to date information about the limitation of visits at Centennial Correctional Facility, contact the jail directly by calling (719) 269-4810.

Inmates are allowed visits determined by their custody level. Level one inmates are granted the least amount of visits per month.

Visits must be scheduled ahead of time and approved by jail staff. You can schedule a visit by calling (719) 269-5510. Visits are not allowed on Saturdays or Sundays. While visiting, you must wear appropriate clothing and bring a valid photo ID to verify your identification.

Commissary

If you would like to support an inmate that is currently housed in the Centennial Correctional Facility, you can send them money to be used in the commissary. The commissary is a way for inmates to buy things that would improve their quality of life.

The commissary offers a variety of products. Inmates are often able to purchase books, hygiene products, writing utensils, and other supplies through the commissary. In order to make a purchase, the inmate needs to have funds in their account with the jail.

Sending Mail

You are able to send inmates mail while they are incarcerated, provided that the mail does not include any prohibited material. Prohibited material includes (but is not limited to) obscene content, advocacy of violence, money, or other material. Inmates at Centennial Correctional Facility are allowed to receive metered, white postcards with pencil, blue or black ink. If you try to send any other items, they will be returned to sender.

All mail that enters the facility is subject to examination by jail staff. Any mail that does not follow the rules will be returned to sender. If the mail potentially could cause a health or safety risk (such as instruction for creating a weapon), it will not be allowed. If mail that is supposed to be returned to sender does not have a return address, it will be stored securely until the inmate’s release.

Early Release of Inmates

Currently, there is no early release being considered for inmates at Centennial Correctional Facility. The executive order that dictated early release by Governor Jared Polis has expired and therefore no longer applies to current inmates held by the Colorado Department of Corrections.

If an inmate would still like to apply for early release, they may do so through the typical Special Needs Parole system or Intensive Supervision Program.
