If you are searching for a friend or loved one in Virginia, it can be difficult to know exactly where to go or what to do.

During this challenging time, you can use this guide to help you search for an inmate in the Gloucester County Jail in Virginia. From there, you will be able to send mail, money, visit, and talk to them.

General Information

Gloucester County Jail is located at 7502 Justice Drive, Gloucester, VA, 23061. This is a county jail which means prisoners sentenced here will not be here longer than 3-years. Those who are sentenced longer than 3-years will serve their time in a state prison.

The mission of Gloucester County Jail is to keep the community safe by providing a safe, secure place for offenders. They also seek to rehabilitate prisons by offering them rights, privileges, and resources.

How to Search for an Inmate

The first thing you need to do before anything else is ensure the person you are looking for is in fact at the Gloucester County Jail in Virginia.

To search for an inmate, you can visit the Gloucester County Sheriff website. Type in the first and last name of the offender you are looking for. There is an orange bar at the top of the page where you can do this.

You can also call 804-693-1376 to get general prisoner information such as whether a prisoner is at the facility or not.

After you have completed your search, you will want to write down pertinent information such as the offender’s date of birth, arrest date, booking number, and any other information you think you may need.

This information will help you to be able to send mail, speak to an inmate, and visit. Information on the website is updated twice per hour.

Staying in Contact with an Inmate

Research has shown that inmate’s who have positive friends and relatives who stay in contact with them have a greater chance of rehabilitation.

Because those who have a positive support system can be rehabilitated more easily, the Gloucester County Jail encourages friends and family to stay in contact. You can do this in the following ways:

Sending Mail

Offenders are allowed to receive mail such as letters, money orders for commissary, photographs, and postcards. Keep in mind photos may not be sexual in nature or contain any nudity.

To ensure mail is sent to the person you wish for it to go to, you should address your envelope in the following way:

Talking on the phone

Inmates at Gloucester County Jail will not be able to receive incoming phone calls and the facility will not take messages for the inmates. However, phones are available for inmates to use.

Inmates may make collect, prepaid collect, or prepaid calling card calls from the phones available. Inmates are allowed to talk for 20-minutes. After that, the call will end.

To set up a prepaid account, you can visit Pay Tel Communications or call a customer service representative at 1-800-729-8355 to set up an account.

Commissary and Sending Money

Sometimes, inmates will need to get additional things that are not provided to them by the jail. They are able to purchase these items at a store within the Gloucester County Jail called commissary.

Inmates are able to purchase items such as clothes, shoes, hygiene products, books, paper, pencils, stamps, envelopes, MP3 players, headphones, tablets (no internet), snacks, and other items they may want.

In order for an inmate to purchase these items, they must have money on their account. Friends and family can put money on this account.

There are automated kiosks located throughout the Gloucester County Jail lobby where you can put money on an inmate’s account 7 days a week. VISA, Mastercard, Discover, and cash are accepted at these machines.

You can also send cash to the prisoner in the mail. No checks will be accepted either way.

Posting Bonds

Because the Gloucester County Jail is a county jail, prisoners who have not yet been sentenced are sometimes able to be bonded out.

Bonds are able to be posted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the Prisoner Property Room window in the lobby. To find out how much a bond is, you can call 804-693-1376.

Keep in mind that the state of Virginia requires a bail surcharge in addition to the bond amount. This can be as much as $85 for each bond and must be paid when you post bond.

You will need to pay the full bail amount if you do not get a bondman. A simple search on Google will show you a variety of bondmen you can contact in Virginia.

If you have any further questions, please reach out to the Gloucester County Jail at 804-693-1376.
