Types of Correctional Facilities in Tennessee
For those who are serving their sentence in a Tennessee state prison, they are overseen by the Tennessee Department of Corrections (DOC). Through a centralized inmate database, you can easily search for an inmate in any Tennessee state prison.
Although you can find inmates who are in federal prison through the DOC website, you will not be able to find those in county jails, police jails, or city jails. You will need to go to their websites.
Below, you will find information about the Tennessee DOC, how to search for an inmate, and how to stay in contact with your loved one.
Tennessee DOC Mission
The mission of the Tennessee Department of Corrections is to be the best correctional facility in the states by operating safe and secure prisons and provide effective community supervision to enhance public safety.
How to Search for an Inmate
In order to stay in communication with an inmate or send money, you will need to gather some information from an inmate search.
Head on over to the Tennessee DOC homepage. Under the heading State Prisons, you will find the Foil-offender search link. It is the last link under that heading. Click on it.
You can search online, or you can download an app. Click search now. You can then do a search by name, TOMIS ID, or state ID.
You will want to write down any information the search gives you about the inmate including: their TOMIS ID, facility location, and birth date. Click location to find which facility the inmate is located in.
How to Stay in Communication with an Inmate
Inmates who stay in contact with friends and family while incarcerated have a better chance of being rehabilitated once they leave the facility than those without contact. You can keep in contact with a loved one in the following ways:
Mail: To send mail to an offender, you will need to know their committed name, TOMIS ID, and the name and address of the facility where the offender is being housed.
Phone/email: Inmates are allowed to call family and friends through collect calls. If you have a cell phone, you will want to set up a prepaid account through the Connect Network to receive calls. You can also set up an account to send and receive electronic messages.
Visits:Inmates are allowed visitation on specific days at specific times. Contact the prison the inmate is located at to get information on visitation.
How to Send Money to an Inmate
An offender may need money to purchase certain things from the prison. There are a few ways you can get money to an inmate.
You can send money using a credit card or debit card only with JPay. However, you can also send a money order or moneygram to with a deposit slip to JPay P.O. Box 279010, Miramar, FL, 33027.
It is important to follow all rules, procedures, and regulations. This keeps you, the offender, and workers safe.
