Types of Correctional Facilities in Pennsylvania
Those who are serving a prison sentence in a Pennsylvania prison are overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Through a centralized inmate database, you can easily search for an inmate.
While you can search for inmates in federal prison, you will not be able to search for inmates in county jails, police jails, or city jails. To find those inmates, you will need to visit their respective sites.
Below, you will find information on the Pennsylvania DOC, how to search for an inmate, and stay in contact.

How to Search for an Inmate
You will need to do an inmate search to find the facility where the offender is located as well as other information that will be needed to stay in contact and send money.
From the PADOC homepage, you will click on the tab under the picture that says inmate locator. You will then be prompted to make sure your popup blocker is disabled. Then to click the inmate locator icon to access the locator.
You can do your inmate search by name, DOB, inmate number, location, race, or committing county.
Write down all information about the inmate after the search. You will need to write down the inmate number, date of birth, and their current location.
How to Stay in Contact with an Inmate
Inmates that stay in contact with friends and family have a better outcome of being rehabilitated. You can stay in contact with a loved one in several different ways.
Mail: One of the easiest ways to stay in contact is by sending letters. Here is the information you will need to send mail to an offender:

Phone calls: In order for you to stay in contact with an inmate through phone conversations, you will need to set up a prepaid account through Securus online or by phone at 1-800-844-6591.
Email: If you need to get an urgent message to an inmate, you can email them. You will need to sign up for an account on Connect Network.
Visit: You can visit in person or virtually in Pennsylvania prisons. Contact the facility where the inmate is located for visitor information.
How to Send Money to an Inmate
If you wish to put money on an inmate’s books, you will need to refer to the information from the inmate search. To send a money order, you will need a money order deposit slip and the following information:
- Correct inmate ID#
- Inmate’s full name
- Sender name and address
