Although the East Helena City Jail now has 64 cells to hold prisoners, it began much smaller. 1971 saw the creation of the first East Helena City Jail. This simple holding facility was only two cells located in the City Lobby. In this location, there was not a large dedicated jail staff. Instead, watch officials and dispatchers worked together to take care of prisoners. While this served its purpose, over time, the jail required upgrades and a change in location.

In 1986, the detention center moved locations. It was placed in the East Helena Civil Center, where six jail cells were made available. In addition, three holding cells were available in the booking area of the jail. The dispatcher and watch official combination still staffed this jail, instead of a group of dedicated correctional officers. At the end of the year, this changed with the integration of specific detainment staff.

East Helena’s rapid growth meant that city facilities had to keep up with the increased population. The 1990s saw many upgrades to both the East Helena police department and the jail itself. Even with an increased capacity of sixteen available cells, the facility was forced to move again in order to meet the needs of the community.

In 2004, the East Helena City Jail was moved to its current location. This new facility includes 64 cells divided into four different squares, with clinical cells, holding cells, and separation cells added to address the requirements of East Helena.
