Leslie County Detention Center is a medium-security county detention center at 2125 KY-118 in Hyden, Kentucky. Built in 1993, this supervision facility is run and operated locally by the Leslie County Sheriff’s Department. It features a 200000 square feet structure housing 200 inmates at any given time under the stewardship of a jail commander, an assistant jail commander, 63 correctional officers, five program coordinators, nine correctional sergeant officers, one full-time nurse, seven part-time nurses, seven support staff and around 20 unpaid volunteers. This is one of the largest facilities in the state and the largest in Leslie County.

This detention center receives its inmates from the local Hyden Police Department, the US Marshal’s Service, and the surrounding towns and municipalities. The inmates held here vary from straight-time, pre-trial, Sentence to Service (STS) to Electronic Home Monitoring (EHM). Moreover, the offenders are not held here for more than two years, and those that receive bigger sentences are transferred to larger state or federal facilities.

Inmates at this facility can work as trustees serving indifferent departments as cooks, in the laundry, at the commissary store, or as orderlies for the staff.

Daily Life at Leslie County Detention Center

Like in other correctional facilities, life at Leslie County Detention Center is no fun. However, with time, the inmates get accustomed to the daily jail routine, which becomes part and parcel of their lives. Each day the inmates are woken up at precisely 6 am for roll calls by the correctional officers. They then proceed to take their breakfast. After breakfast, each inmate reports to their work station to attend their work programs or any other activities the jailer might assign them. The work programs come in handy to arm the inmates with skills they can use when released from jail. While some inmates partake of the provided work programs, others attend educational classes and mandated treatment programs.

After the daily activities and programs, the inmates proceed for lunch, followed by another roll call. They then return to their cells and others the common room, where they spend the rest of the evening. Dinner is then served later in the evening before another roll call is taken. After the last roll call, all the lights are switched off as inmates retire for the night. While the routine is followed religiously, inmates get some time off to relax, write letters and read publications.

At Leslie County Detention, inmates are dressed in the official jail uniform, primarily a jumpsuit or scrubs. Inmates also receive visitors during approved days.

Inmate Bookings

When an inmate is brought to this facility, they are processed accordingly by the admission officers. Their details are entered into the facility’s system, and they are briefed on the way forward and what is expected of them at this facility. The intake process takes place in the following steps:

  • An offender is first held in a holding cell as they wait for their processing.
  • The admission officer asks the offender for their details, including full name, date of birth, area of residence, and emergency contact, among others.
  • The offender will be asked to provide a record of their medical and mental health history.
  • The offender receives an ID number.
  • Their fingerprints are taken.
  • A mugshot is taken
  • Any personal property is confiscated for storage. Often return during the release day.
  • The offender is allowed to contact a loved one or the bondsman.
  • If the offender is not released on bail, they will be given a jail uniform.

Bailing Your Loved One

Instead of letting your loved one spend time in jail, you can choose to bail them out. This means paying an agreed amount of money as a motivation to prompt them to appear in court on a prescribed date. You can seek a bail bondsman’s services if you do not have the financial muscles to foot the bail bill. However, if your loved one is limited to cash bail, you may not be able to engage the services of a bondsman since the jail will not accept a check. The bond is often returned if the offender does not violate its terms and conditions.

If your bail is not cash bond only, you can reach out to a local bondsman, and luckily there are many in Leslie County. The bondsman will help you pay the bail and, in return, will charge you between 10 to 15 % of the total set bail. This means if your loved one’s bail has been set at $1000, you will pay them around $100.

Inmate Visitation

Leslie County Jail permits inmates to receive visitors above 18 years of age. If a visitor is below this age, they are expected to be accompanied by an adult, often a legal guardian. Moreover, visitors are required to provide legal identification documents.  Minors can present their birth certificates, while adults must show their driver’s licenses or state-issued identification numbers.

An inmate can only receive three visitors per session, including children or clergy, and can only have one visit per day.  The visitation schedule is as follows:

  • Monday to Friday— 7:30 am to 9:00 pm.
  • Saturday and Sunday — 7:30 am to 2:30 pm.
