Types of Correctional Facilities in Utah

If a loved one is serving a sentence in a federal state prison in Utah, they are overseen by the Utah Department of Corrections. With a centralized inmate databases, you are able to search for inmates in any prison throughout Utah.

However, it is important to keep in mind that inmates serving in county jails, police jails, or city jails will not be found on the Utah DOC website. Instead, you will need to visit those sites independently.

Below, you will find information on the Utah Department of Corrections, how to search for an inmate, and how to stay in contact using the inmate search.

Utah DOC Mission

Every state has a specific mission they try to uphold throughout their prisons. The Utah Department of Corrections is a team of dedicated professionals that ensures public safety by effectively managing offenders while maintaining close collaboration with partner agencies in the community. They provide the maximum opportunities for offenders to make positive, lasting changes through accountability, treatment, education, and safe environments.

How to Search for an Offender

In order to contact or send money to an offender, you will need to gather some information about the inmate from an offender search.

From the Utah DOC homepage, you will see an offender search button on the left-hand side. Click it. You can either search by name or by offender number.

Once you find the inmate you are searching for, you will want to write down the information that you found such as offender number, DOB, the location of the inmate, and the housing facility.

How to Keep in Contact with an Inmate

It is important for an inmate to stay in contact with friends and family. Staying in contact helps them to be rehabilitated. The Utah DOC offers several ways to stay in contact with a loved one.

Visiting: In order to visit a loved one, you will need to fill out a visitor application form to be approved.

Phone calls: Inmates are not allowed to receive incoming calls, but they can make calls to you. In order for them to call you, you will need to register for a prepaid account through CenturyLink. You can also call to set up an account at 888-506-8407.

Mail: Inmates can begin receiving letters as soon as they enter prison. Letters should be addressed in the following ways:

  • Inmate name and offender number
  • Utah State Prison
  • O. Box 250
  • Draper, UT 84020

OR

  • Inmate name and offender number
  • Central Utah Correctional Facility
  • O. Box 550
  • Gunnison, UT 84634

How to Send Money

The Utah DOC uses a third party provider known as Access Corrections to handle deposits to inmates accounts.

You can sign up online to send money to an inmate, or you can download the payment form and follow the instructions.

Keep in mind that all these rules and regulations are set in place to keep everyone safe including the inmates, workers, and visitors.
