Half a mile north of Texas State Highway 30, the Reverend CA Holliday Transfer Facility is a holding complex for inmates in Texas. It is also known as the Holliday Transfer Unit. The facility itself is named after CA Holliday, an African-American pastor who had a deep impact on the community of Huntsville, Texas. Like other detention units in Texas, smoking is not allowed on the ground of the Holliday Transfer Unit.
The facility is not used for permanent incarceration. Instead, the inmates in the complex are usually on their way to another detention facility. However, this does not mean it is a small facility. The maximum capacity of the Transfer Facility is 2,128. The facility takes up 1,396 square acres of land. The jail itself is maintained by 435 employees, who form a mix of security staff, administrators, medical and mental health professionals, and other positions.
All inmates in the transfer facility are male. The Transfer Facility allows certain inmates the ability to take part in programs through the jail to better their lives. The jail offers training in life skills, parenting, substance abuse education, and other educational courses. In addition to these programs, the prison has chaplaincy and faith-based programs.

The Holliday Unit incarcerates inmates for a variety of offenses. Inmate Work
The CA Holliday Transfer Facility is notable because of the wide range of work opportunities it provides for its inmates. These programs provide an outlet for inmates to be productive and add value to their community.
Some of the work programs integrated with the prison are based in fire prevention. Inmates clear brush away from nearby roads and populated areas to lower the risk of wildfire.
Other work programs have the inmates build certain items. These products are often hobby-based and are then auctioned off or donated to aid charities in the area.
These work programs are available because the Holliday Unit is a minimum-security prison. Inmates in this location have to have a sentence of less than 8 years. They must also be non-violent offenders and have a clear record of discipline.
How to Visit Inmates
To stay in touch with family members or friends that have been incarcerated in the CA Holliday Transfer Facility, guests are allowed to visit inmates. However, keep in mind that the primary concern of all prison operations is the security of the facility and the safety of those within. Any behavior or items that may have a negative effect on this concern are prohibited.
Visitation is available at the prison on Saturdays and Sundays. On these days, you may come between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. You must be approved to have a visit with the inmate before you can see them. Bring a valid, current photo ID issued to you by a government agency to confirm your identification.
Depending on the custody status of the inmate you are visiting, your visit will either be contact or no-contact. Visitation is a privilege, not a right.
The Holliday Unit is a smoke-free detention center, like all others in the state of Texas. Do not bring cigarettes or any other smoking accouterment. You will also not be allowed to bring alcohol, weapons, or any other prohibited items.
You will also be searched upon your entrance to the prison. Cell phones and other electronic devices are forbidden. You must be dressed appropriately. No cleavage, form-fitting clothing, or obscene/ provocative graphics will be allowed. The jail staff reserves the right to decide if your clothing is appropriate or not.
Sending Letters to Inmates
The Texas Department of Corrections encourages families and friends to write often to inmates. Note that every piece of mail that enters the prison will be searched and returned to sender if it is inappropriate. All mail for inmates has to be sent through the official channels. Letters for more than one inmate cannot be in the same envelope.
When filling out the address on your envelope, make sure that you include the inmate’s full name, TCDJ number, and unit address. You can find more information about this here.
Printed material such as magazines, books, and newspapers have to be sent by the publisher or bookstore, they cannot be sent via a third party. These items are still subject to a review by the jail staff.

Receiving Phone Calls
While inmates are not able to receive incoming calls, they can make outgoing calls from the prison at certain times. The number that they are calling must first register with the TDCJ before the call can go through. You can register your number by calling 1-866-806-7804 or visiting http://texasprisonphone.com.
Phone calls are limited in length and subject to recording. You must be at least 18 years old to accept a call from an inmate and your phone number must match the number associated with your driver’s license or telephone bill.
