Rusk County Jail is a maximum-security correctional facility in Henderson City, Rusk County, Texas. The facility is operated by the Rusk County Sheriff’s Department under John Wayne Valdez’s leadership with the assistance of about 70 staff members. The jail boasts of about 5760 yearly bookings, which average at 288 a day.
Despite its high security, most inmates are temporarily held at this facility before they are transferred to other state or federal facilities. Most are awaiting their trials for violent crimes such as rape, murder, or violence. However, those incarcerated for not more than one year for low-level misdemeanors are permanently housed until the end of their sentences. The County’s Municipal Police Department also holds their offenders here.
With about 288 inmates, this facility adopts a direct supervision rehabilitation method. This means the inmates are not entirely locked up but are housed in housing units where the correctional officers observe them.
Sheriff’s Department
The Rusk County Sheriff’s Department solely oversees the running of this facility. John Wayne is currently the sheriff, having taken the oath of office on 1st January 2021. Alongside his team, Wayne is charged with maintaining the safety, health, and general well-being of the offenders according to the state’s laws. He also ensures that the inmates are disciplined and are prevented from escaping custody.
Rusk County Jail’s Intake Procedures and Booking
When an inmate is brought to this facility, there is a due process that they have to undergo to get admitted. This aids in the orderliness and smooth operation of the facility. The intake process entails the following:
- The inmate is held in a holding cell waiting to get processed.
- The processing officer questions the inmate; they provide their legal names, date of birth, street address, and emergency contact loved one, among other relevant details.
- The processing officer will also ask about the inmate’s medical and psychological history.
- The inmate’s fingerprints are taken, and they are given an identification number.
- A photo for their mugshot is also taken.
- If the offender had any personal property, it is taken and stored for them until when they are released.
- In case an offender intends to get released as soon as possible, they are expected to make bail.
Getting Someone Out of Rusk County Jail
Rusk County Jail houses offenders temporarily. This means some of them could be released on bail, especially those arrested by the municipal police department. Moreover, those waiting for trials can also be bonded or bailed by their loved ones. To bail out your loved one held at this facility, you are required to get a bondsman.
Your loved one’s bond could be set so high that you might not afford it at that specific moment. A bondsman comes in handy to pay the bail on your behalf, and you can pay them a percentage of the bond, usually around 10%. For instance, if your loved one’s bail is set at $1000, you will pay the bondsman $100.
How to Lookup an Inmate
You can easily find out whether your loved one is held at this facility via the available online search sites. However, the Rusk County Sheriff’s website has an online jail roster for inmates at their facilities. To look up your inmate of interest, you enter their first and last name.
Once you trace your loved one, you can then click on their name to get more information about their stay at this facility. You can acquire information about their arrest, booking, charges, bail, or any other information related to their incarceration. Some of this information is critical when you want to send them money, writing them a mail, or even visit them.
How to Stay in Contact with a Loved One at Rusk County Jail
The Rusk County Sheriff’s Department encourages offenders to stay in close contact with their loved ones. This makes the inmates feel that they are not on their own and constantly helps the facility’s efforts to rehabilitate them. You can stay in contact with your loved one through the following ways:
- Sending them a Mail/Package
You can send an inmate a mail via the United States Postal Service. However, all mails are expected to have the right inmate’s details and return address for them to be delivered to the recipients. The inmates’ mailing address is:
Inmate’s Full Name
Rusk County Jail
210 Charlevoix Street, Henderson, TX, 75652
You can also send your loved one up to 15 photographs. However, this should not exceed 4” by 6” in size and should not be Polaroids.
- Through Phone Calls
Inmates are not allowed to receive calls from anybody, but they are assigned a call time to make their calls. When booked into this facility, they are expected to provide a list of contacts they can call. They then fund the calls via their commissary accounts. You can engage 903-655-3000 in case you want to send an inmate phone calls money.
Visiting
You can also visit your loved one held at Rusk County Jail at the scheduled appointed time. Before you are allowed into this jail as a visitor, the inmate must file a visitor’s request form and submit it for approval by the authorities. To make this easy, you can mail your details to your loved ones to provide the correct information. When your request is submitted, the authorities run a background check on you to establish if you are suitable. If you have been recently released from jail or are considered a criminal, you might not be welcome to visit.
