The Coos County Jail houses county, state, and federal prisoners at its location in Coquille, OR. It also houses inmates for the city of Coquille as they do not have a city jail. The facility was expanded in 2018, and it is built to hold up to 215 inmates; however, it currently has only 98 beds.  The jail complex is attached to and operated by the Coos County Sheriff’s Department located at 250 N Baxter St, Coquille, OR.

The jail’s office is available Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm but closes from 11:15 am – 12:30 pm for lunch each day. The main office can be reached by calling 541-396-7800 during business hours.

Coos County Jail Roster

Coos county jail roster is posted for public view on the official Coos County Sherriff’s Department website. While this roster includes information about who is detained and when they were transferred into the facility, it does not include current inmate mugshots. It does include what level of security the prisoner is given and where in the jail he or she is being housed.

Visiting the Jail

The jail offers twice-weekly visitation.  Eligible inmates must be booked into the facility for at least 72 hours and have no disciplinary status issues.  Visits are limited to 30 minutes, and inmates may have up to two visits each week.

Visits must be scheduled twenty-four hours before the visit can occur, and they can be scheduled by calling 541-396-7861.  Appointments for visitation can only be scheduled between 1:00 pm and 3:00p.  Furthermore, all visitors must be on the inmate’s approved visitation list.  In order for a visitor to be added to the approved list, the inmate must request addition to their visitors list in writing.  New visitors may not make appointments until after the inmate’s written request is reviewed and approved by the jail’s administrative staff.

Visitation times for male inmates can be scheduled for Sunday and Tuesday from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.  For female visitors, visitation can be scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. No visits will be allowed outside of these hours for any reason.

Members of the clergy may visit during regular visiting hours without appearing on the approved list.  These unique clergy visits can not be scheduled for anyone related to the inmate, and the individual must be a vetted clergy member.

All clergy members must go through the clergy certification process. They must fill out an application that must be approved by the jail Chaplin and other administration members.  Anyone who is not approved will be considered a regular visitor.

Rules for Visitors

There are a considerable number of rules that all visitors to the facility must follow. A member of the administration may cancel any visit at any time if an inmate or visitor violates any of these rules.  Visits might also be canceled if a staff member feels it may be necessary for the safety of the facility.

  • All visitors must be over eighteen years old. Children may come for visitation, but they must be accompanied by an approved visitor, preferably a parent. Parents/guardians must keep control of their children at all times during the visit.  If the children become disruptive to other visitors, inmates, or staff, they must be removed from the visitation area, or the visit may be suspended for everyone.
  • Food or beverages will not be allowed in the visiting area.
  • All visitors must have a valid picture ID. If the ID is not a state-issued driver’s license, it must clearly show the visitor’s name and date of birth. Identification that does not show a birth date will not be accepted for any reason.
  • Personal items will not be allowed inside the jail. This includes but is not limited to purses, bags of any kind, and cellphones.
  • Explosive devices, firearms, alcoholic beverages, dangerous drugs including narcotics, knives, and any kind of ammunition are strictly prohibited from the facility. Any other item besides these that might threaten the safety of the jail is also restricted. Bringing dangerous items into the jail might also result in prosecution.
  • Visitors should not exchange any objects with an inmate. No exceptions to this will be made for any reason.
  • Supplying (or attempting to supply) contraband during visits is prohibited and a felony under current Oregon Law. Anyone caught bringing contraband in the facility will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
  • A dress code for visitors is enforced. Clothing may not be suggestive in nature. What qualifies as suggestive will be determined by the staff.  Clothing can also not resemble any uniforms used in the building or create a possible safety/security hazard. Repeat dress code violations could result in a visitor being removed from the approved visitation list.

Violating this code of conduct might cause the visit to be terminated.  Violations could also possibly result in a visitor being removed from the inmate’s approved visitors list.  As previously mentioned, violations of some of these rules can also result in prosecution.  Heightened security will be present at all times to ensure that these rules are followed.

Criminal Background

All inmates housed at this facility will be entered into the Oregon Computerized Criminal History database.  Oregon State Police maintain these files. A limited number of records from these files are available to the public through the Oregon State Police website.  There is a fee for accessing these records, and the inmate’s complete record is not available.  The complete record is only available to law enforcement.  They can’t be run by law enforcement on behalf of a private citizen.
