Types of Correctional Facilities in New York

Use this website for informational purposes only.

For those who are serving a sentence in New York state prisons, they are overseen by the New York City Department of Corrections. Through a centralized inmate database, you can easily find an inmate in any state prison.

Those who are serving time in county jails, police jails, or city jails are not maintained by the NYC DOC systems. You will have to visit those respective sites.

Below, you will find information on the NYC DOC, how to do an inmate search, and stay in contact with an inmate.

New York City DOC Mission

The New York City Department of Corrections is a part of the criminal justice system. They are dedicated to enhancing public safety by maintaining a safe and secure environment for the community and staff while providing offenders with the tools and opportunities they need to be successful and rehabilitated.

How to Search for an Inmate

With their centralized database, the NYC DOC makes it easy to search for an inmate in any state prison. From the homepage, you will click on the tab across the top that says inmate info.

For current information, location, and basic case information, you will then click on look up inmate. You will either need to know their first and last name or their NYSID number.

If you only know the last name, the DOC database will bring up a list of inmates with that last name that you can choose from.

Remember to write down all the information including their birth year, NYSID number, case number, and the facility they are at so you can refer to it at a later time.

How to Stay in contact with an Inmate

Once you have done an inmate search and know the location of an offender, you can easily stay in contact with them.

Visit an Inmate: To visit an inmate, you will need a valid ID and follow strict guidelines and rules to visit. Each facility has different rules, so look up the facility your loved one is at to find out more about visiting.

Write an inmate: Writing to an inmate is still the easiest way to stay in contact. To write to an inmate, you will need to know their full name, book and case number, and full address of the facility where the inmate is located.

How to Send Money to an Inmate

From the inmate search, you will be able to send an inmate money. You will need the inmates first and last name and case number to send money. Here are the instructions:

  1. Go to the homepage.
  2. On the right, find the Inmate Lookup box.
  3. Click Look Up Inmate.
  4. Enter the inmate's NYSID or Book and Case Number. Or, enter the inmate's first and last name and date of birth (or age).
  5. Click on the inmate you want to send money to.
  6. On the page for the inmate, click the Send Money button.
  7. This brings up an instruction page.
  8. Click on the logo for the money transfer agent you want to use. This takes you to the money transfer agent's website.
  9. Follow the directions at the money transfer agent's website to complete your money transfer

Most any information you need to send money or stay in contact with an inmate will be found when you do an inmate search. Keep in mind all rules and regulations are there to keep you, the inmates, and the workers safe.
