The Curry County Detention Center in New Mexico, a part of the Curry County Jail, hosts both an adult and a juvenile detention center. This detention center has been around since 1999. The goal is not just to lock up the inmates and forget about them. Instead, it is about creating a facility that is humane, secure, and safe for the inmates, staff, and community. The Curry County Detention Center is able to hold 258 inmates maximum.

There are several parts available to the Curry County Detention Center. It contains a maximum security, minimum security, and even some dormitory housing for those how are allowed to go on work release during the day.

Curry County Adult Detention Center

The Curry County Jail includes both an adult detention center and a juvenile detention center. The adult center has a staff of 65, including security and administrative staff. There are also several positions for contract personnel that include the commissary, kitchen, health, mental, and medical departments as needed.

The housing of the adult detention center was built during 1993 and had 208 beds. There was also an annex added on with another 50 beds. Inmates in this part can be housed in 9 different housing units, though most will share a cell with three other inmates if the detention center is full.

The average female population as of 2015 was 44, with the average daily male population being 181. Most of the inmates who stay in the Curry County Detention Center are pre-trial detainees so they may not spend as much time there. In some cases, when the detention center starts to get overcrowded, some of the inmates will be housed in other counties.

Juvenile Detention Center

There is also a juvenile detention center that is attached to the Curry County Jail. This part of the detention center contains 15 staff positions. All of the mental health and medical needs are covered when necessary by contracted personnel.

Currently this part of the detention facility includes 17 beds. There are detention officers posted inside the dayrooms of the housing unit so that they can observe and supervise the activities of the juveniles whenever it is necessary. Inmates of this part will be housed in one of three units. Two of the units can hold six individuals each and the third one will house four.

It is possible to stay in contact with a friend or a loved one while they are in this detention center. It can provide them with support and can help improve their chances at rehabilitation and staying out of jail in the future. The jail does have some strict guidelines on who is allowed to contact the inmate in an effort to limit this to only positive friends and family.

Some of the ways that you can contact your inmate while they stay at this detention center includes:

  • Talk to them on the phone: While inmates are not allowed to receive calls from anyone while at the detention center, they are allowed to call friends and family during specific hours. Make sure that your inmate has your number and you can communicate this way.
  • Send mail or letters: This is one of the most efficient ways to contact your inmate. You will need to have their name as well as their inmate ID number to make sure the letter gets to them.
  • Visit them: You will need to schedule this visit ahead of time online. The jail clerks are not able to handle this in person for you. The registration process is really easy though so you will be able to get it set up and ready to go in no time and can schedule a time that works for you and the inmate.
