How to Use the NJDOC Inmate Telephone System

After you have done an inmate search, you may be looking for a way to communicate with an inmate. Inmates are allowed to make phone calls while incarcerated at the New Jersey DOC. They cannot receive any phone calls; however, they have the option to either use collect calls or prepaid calls. This is simple, using the telephone system offered by NJDOC. The system is managed by GTL. An inmate can do two types of calls, which is collect calling or debit calling.

The collect calling is where they call you, and you pay for the call. Debit calling is where the inmate calls you and the money is debited from their account. You can choose which way is better to help you communicate with the inmate.

Inmates have a limitation for the number of people who can contact them, roughly ten on each of the inmate's call list. For security reasons, most inmates will have their calls monitored except for official legal calls.

Sending Mail

Inmates at the jersey DOC security facilities’ are encouraged to correspond with their friends and loved ones. The facility allows inmates up to 80 stamps in their possession, with the liberty to send and receive as much mail as they want to.

If a friend or loved one wants to send a photo to an inmate to maybe remind them of home or show them how much their little one has grown, they will have to send in a 4" by 6" photo. Instant photos and Polaroid photos, any gang-like hand gestures, and tattoos are prohibited.

For security purposes, all incoming and outgoing mail will be inspected for a security breach, at any New Jersey DOC. If incoming mail is flagged for a security breach, it will either be confiscated or sent back. However, official mail will be opened in the presence of the inmate.

If you deposit the money through the phone, you will have to call JPay at 1-800-574-5729. You can use debit or credit cards, and you will be charged between $4 and $12.

You can deposit the money through the mail, as it is the cheapest option to get money to an inmate's commissary. JPay will not charge you to send money to an inmate, although it may take a bit longer to reach the facility.

Use the united postal money order and include the inmate's name and ID before sending the money in the mail.
