Types of Correctional Facilities in Montana

Offenders who are sentenced to a Montana prison are overseen by the Montana Department of Corrections (DOC). The DOC has a centralized inmate database in which you can easily search for an inmate.

Those who are serving a sentence in county jails, police jails, or city jails will not be able to be found on the Montana Department of Corrections website. You will need to refer to their websites for information.

Read the instructions below to learn how to do an inmate search.

How to Search for an Inmate

You will need to do an inmate search to find an offender’s facility, ID number, or address. In order to talk to or visit an inmate, you will need this information.

To search for an inmate from the Montana DOC homepage, simply click on the picture of the keyboard that says, “offender search.” If you know the inmates ID, you can search for them using that.

However, if you do not know the inmates ID, you will need to know their first and last name to complete the search. Be sure to write down all information you find when doing the search as you will need it later on.

How to Contact an Inmate

Families are a key support group for rehabilitating an offender. There are three ways you can keep in touch with an inmate:

By Phone: To receive a call from an inmate, you must accept the charges or set up a prepaid account with the Inmate Telephone System Provider.

Visiting: Each facility within the DOC has a different way of handling visits. To find information on visiting, visit the Visiting Programs and Facilities web page.

By Mail: You can send a letter, publications, and packages to an inmate. However, they must have the following information on the package: inmates last name and DOC number, facility address, sender's name, and complete return address

Send Money to an Inmate

In order for you to send money to an inmate, you must be on the inmates approved visitors list. Here are the ways you can send an inmate money:

Mail it in: You can mail in a cashier’s check or money order. Be sure to include the inmate's full name, DOC number, and the sender's full name and address.

Send online:To transfer money online, you will need to sign up for an Inmate Trust Account Deposit. There is a $250 limit for transactions to inmates.

There are various rules and regulations that come into play when dealing with the Montana DOC. Keep in mind these are in place to keep you, the inmate, and the workers safe.
