Types of Correctional Facilities in Missouri

Those who are serving prison time in Missouri are overseen by the Missouri Department of Corrections (DOC). The DOC has a centralized inmate database that makes it easy to search for an inmate.

Keep in mind that inmates who are serving their time in a county jail, police jail, or city jail will not be maintained by the DOC inmate database. Instead, you will need to refer to their websites for inmate details.

Missouri DOC Mission

The Missouri Department of Corrections is comprised of trained professionals who work hard to improve lives for safer communities. They facilitate treatment, education, and job training to inmates to contribute to their communities within and outside the walls. It is their mission that when inmates return to the community that they are good neighbors.

How to Search for an Inmate

If you wish to do an inmate search, you can easily do one from the MODOC Offender Search web page. This page will search active offenders including probationers and parolees. You will need to know the inmates first and last name or alias

Be sure to write down all information given in the inmate search as you may need this information to send mail, talk to an inmate, or visit an inmate.

How to Talk to an Inmate

Once you do an inmate search using the DOC website, you will be able to find out where an inmate is located. From there, you can send mail to an inmate as much as you wish. Here is what will need to be included on the envelope:

  • Your return address
  • Facility address where the inmate is located
  • Offender's name
  • Offender's DOC number

Although offenders are not able to accept incoming phone calls, there are telephones available throughout the prison. Offenders will make collect calls through a system called Securus.

If you have a cell phone, you will want to set up to receive collect or prepaid calls. You can do this by visiting Securus online. Otherwise, you may not be able to accept the call.

How to Send Money to an Inmate

Inmates will need extra money on their books to make calls, get certain items, or enjoy certain things. There are four ways that you can get money to an inmate:

Jpay: If you wish to send in a money order or cashiers check, you can do so by printing out a deposit voucher from Jpay and sending it in.

Jpay mobile: Jpay mobile allows you to easily transfer money from your account to an inmate’s account. Simply sign up online, first.

By phone: You can easily call  1-800-574-5729 to put money on an inmate's books. You will need a MasterCard or VISA.

Moneygram: You can also send a moneygram which is like cash from local places such as Walmart or CVS.

Remember, the procedures and regulations are set in place to keep everyone happy and safe. It is important to follow the procedures the way they are laid out.
