Types of Correctional Facilities in Michigan

Those who are serving a sentence in Michigan state prisons are overseen by the Michigan Department of Correction (DOC). Their centralized inmate database allows you to find inmates in all prisons throughout Michigan, easily.

However, if a loved one is not serving time in a state prison, you will have to visit the website for the county jail, police jail, or city jail.

Keep reading below to find out how to lookup an inmate and find the information you need to support them through this tough time.

Michigan DOC Mission and Vision

The trained professionals working for the Michigan Department of Corrections strives to make Michigan safer by holding offenders accountable while promoting their success.

Their vision isn’t just to get the offenders off the street, but to transform and rehabilitate them in to being law-abiding citizens in the community.

How to Speak to an Inmate

Inmates cannot receive phone calls, and you will have to wait for them to call you. This can be stressful if there is information you need to get to an inmate.

To sign up for a prepaid calling account for those with cell phones, you can call PCS at 855-466-2832 or visit their website.

The Michigan DOC will allow you to send inbound electronic messages to offenders. You must establish an account to do this with Jpay.

How to Search for an Inmate

There are many reasons you may need to search for an inmate, but the most common is to find out the facility they are in so that you can get money, messages, and mail to them.

From the DOC homepage, you will look on the left-hand side of the page and click on the 7th button down which says, “Offender Search.” From there, you will be redirected to the offender information tracking system.

From there, you will scroll to the bottom of the page and click complete a search. You must agree to the terms and conditions. You will need to know the offender’s MDOC number, or the following information:

  • Last name
  • First name
  • Sex
  • Race
  • Age
  • Offender status
  • Possible marks or scars

Be sure to write all the information down including the facility where they are located, so you can refer to this information later.

Visiting an Offender

Visiting a loved one is completely up to the offender. The prisoner must complete a visitor list and identify immediate family members. The list can only contain 10 potential visitors.

Once those people are placed on the offender’s visitor list, the visitor must complete a Visiting Application. No visits will be allowed without this approval.

Sometimes, visits will be put on hold due to sickness or safety concerns. You can choose to be notified of these times.

Go to the prison directory and choose the page for the correctional facility and register via the Nixle Widget. Or, you can text the zip code of the facility to 888777 to receive updates.

The Michigan Department of Corrections mission is to keep everyone safe. Therefore, all procedures and rules will need to be followed. Please keep in mind this is not to punish anyone, but to keep workers, inmates, and visitors safe.
