Types of Correctional Facilities in Louisiana

Those who are serving their sentence in a Louisiana prison will be overseen by the Louisiana Department of Corrections (DOC). With a centralized inmate database, you will be able to easily search for an inmate.

Those who are serving time in county jails, police jails, or city jails will not be in this database. You will need to their respective sites for information.

Read the instructions below to gather information on searching for an inmate.

Louisiana DOC Mission

It is important for friends and family to know inmates are in the best place for them. In ensuring inmates are getting what they need to be rehabilitated, the Louisiana Department of Corrections provides safety for staff and offenders by maintaining an organized and disciplined system of operations which enhances the stability of all programs.

Employees are trained on the principles of code of ethics of the American Correctional Association, and inmates are granted the following:

  • Provision of basic services such as food, clothing, and shelter.
  • Opportunity for change through moral rehabilitation programs.
  • Reentry into the community with proper supervision of parole.

How to Search for an Inmate

There are several reasons you may need to search for an inmate. You may need to find out which facility they are in, gather information, or contact them.

From the home page of the DOC website, you will scroll down to the quick access. There will be a button for offender locator that you will click on to find information on finding offenders on VineLink.

You can also call 255-383-4580 to access the offender locator system. You will need to know the offenders DOC number, or you can enter their name and date of birth. This will give you access to housing assignment, address of the facility, a contact phone number, and release date.

How to Communicate with an Offender

Once you know where the offender is located, you may write the inmate at any time. It is up to the offender to have a list of 20 phone numbers that they are approved to call. If they try to call a number not approved, it will be blocked.

An offender is able to make collect calls through Securus Technologies. If you wish to prepay for these calls or have a cell phone, you will need to register with Securus online.

How to Send Money to an Offender

For those who wish to send funds to an offender, you can do so in the following ways:

  • Mail: You will need a Jpay deposit slip to send a money order via mail.
  • Walk-in locations for MoneyGram: You can send cash via MoneyGram at local places like CVS and Walmart. You will need the offenders information.
  • JPays mobile app: You can go online to JPay and transfer funds to an offender's account. You must register with the offender’s information.
  • Phone: You can call 1-800-574-5729 and transfer funds using a Mastercard or Visa.
  • Kiosks: Kiosks are located in the state correctional facility visiting areas.

All procedures and guidelines must be followed in order for you to accomplish what you desire. This is to protect the workers, inmates, and the community.
