Inmates who do not have money in their account for commissary will be provided envelopes, paper, and postcards each week. Inmates must make a request for such items by Wednesday in order to receive these items.

Keep in mind that all mail will be opened and inspected for contraband.

Talk on the phone: Inmates cannot receive incoming phone calls. However, they can make collect calls to friends and family. Be sure to send your phone number in a letter if they don’t know it by heart.

Visit an inmate: To visit an inmate at Orleans Parish Prison, you must schedule a visitation appointment. To do this, you can call 504-827-8810 seven days a week from 10:30am to 3:30pm. Before scheduling a visit, you will want to look at the visitation guidelines and times. Keep the following in mind when scheduling a visit:

  • Inmates are only allowed 2 visits per month.

  • Only 1 child is permitted to visit at a time.

  • You must bring proper forms of identification for yourself and your child (birth certificate).

  • You must cancel a scheduled visit two hours prior.

  • If you do not show up for a visit more than twice in 30 days or 3 consecutive times, your visitation may be suspended.

  • If you prefer to send money the old-fashioned way, you can send money through the mail with a money order. Keep the following in mind when choosing this option:

    • Money orders should be made payable to Orleans Parish Prison Commissary
