Types of Correctional Facilities in Illinois
Those who are serving their sentence in an Illinois state prison are overseen by the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). The IDOC has a centralized inmate database that makes it easy to search for inmates in federal prison.
However, if an inmate is serving their time in a county jail, police jail, or a city jail, you will have to visit those sites to find information.
Below you will find information on how to do an inmate search. From there, you will be able to send money and contact an offender.
Illinois Department of Corrections Mission
Every prison throughout the states has a mission. The mission of the Illinois Department of Corrections is to protect the public from those who break the law through a system of incarceration, supervision, and programs to enhance successful reentry into society.
How to Do an Inmate Search
If you would like to talk to an inmate, send money, or visit, you will need to first do an inmate search to get the information you need. You can easily do an inmate search online using the IDOC website.
From the home page, you will find tabs across the top. Click on offender search and from there inmate search. You will be asked how you want to search. You can search by last name, birthdate, or IDOC number.
Once you find the inmate you are looking for, be sure to record their IDOC number as well as other information listed on the site as you may need this information for other things.
If you do not wish to find an inmate, but want to find out sex offender registration or other information in your area, you can do the following searches from the offender search tab:
- Wanted fugitive search
- Illinois sex offender registrant search
- Parole Sex Registrant search
- Community notification of inmate early release search
