Types of Correctional Facilities in Georgia

Those who are incarcerated and serving their time in a Georgia state prison are overseen by the Georgia Department of Corrections (DOC). Inmates who are in federal prison can be searched easily on the BOP website. However, those that are serving time in county jails, police jails, or city jails will not be found on the BOP website. Instead, you will need to find details on their specific site. Below you will find information on how to do an inmate search and from there talk to, visit, or send money to an inmate.

Georgia DOC Mission

Every state prison throughout the United States has a mission for those who are incarcerated, the community, and the workers. The Georgia Department of Corrections has an amazing team of people who protect the public through operating secure and safe facilities. Their mission is to reduce recidivism through effective programming, education, and healthcare.

The core values of professionalism, responsibility, integrity, dependability, and effectiveness (PRIDE) reflect the mission and values of the organization and form a foundation for which employees work to fulfill the mission.

How to do an Inmate Search

Finding an inmate is the first step to being able to contact, visit, or send money to an offender. From the Georgia Department of Corrections home page, you will see a menu across the top, click on “find an offender.” You must agree to the disclaimer.

You can search for the offender by name and description. To do this, you will need to know the inmates last name, first name, gender, race, age, and most recent institution if applicable. Or, you can search for an inmate if you know their ID or case number.

Some inmates will not be found during a search due to safety concerns. If you can’t find an inmate or need help, fill out the contact form.

How to Talk to an Inmate

To speak with an inmate via phone, you will need to use Securus Technologies. The Georgia Department of Corrections uses Securus Technologies to ensure your communications with an inmate are as smooth as possible. You will need information from the inmate search such as their facility to complete this step.

Friends and family members can set up a prepaid direct or collect account with Securus online or by calling 1-800-844-6591. Also, offenders can transfer money from their accounts to make telephone calls as well. Costs per minute range from .13 cents to .75 cents depending on the type of call. Keep the following in mind when you speak to an inmate:

  • All calls are subject to monitoring and recording
  • You can not do 3-way calling
  • The maximum phone call is 15 minutes
  • Calls are restricted to only telephone numbers on the offenders call allow list

Send Money to an Inmate

There are several ways you can send money to an offender. Each of these options is found on the Georgia DOC website. Here are the ways you can get money to your inmate:

  • Send a free money order. Simply click on create money order voucher, print the voucher, and mail it in.
  • Send money online. You can use the online system JPay to easily send an inmate money online. You will need their ID which will be found during an inmate search.
  • Send a moneygram. You can send a moneygram at locations such as CVS and Walmart. Send to Georgia DOC receiver code 6857/Georgia Probation Receiver code 6901.

Remember, following the guidelines and procedures for finding an inmate, talking to an inmate, and sending money are set in place to keep everyone secure and safe.
