Types of Correctional Facilities in California
Those who are sentenced in California State Prisons are overseen by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). You can easily search for an inmate in their centralized inmate database known as the BOP website. Keep in mind that only those sentenced to federal prison can be searched for on BOP. Those who are serving their time in county jails, police jails, or city jails will need to refer to those websites for inmate details.
Mission of the CDCR
Each state has its own mission when it comes to inmates. The California Department of Corrections is comprised of trained professionals that work hard to enhance public safety through safe and secure incarceration of offenders, effective parole supervision as well as rehabilitative strategies that successfully integrate offenders back into the community.
How to Search for an Inmate
Are you wanting to lookup an inmate? Finding an inmate at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation can be done easily online. From the home page, you will scroll over offender info and go down to inmate locator. Then, you will need to agree to the disclaimer. You will need the following information to find an inmate:
- Inmate number or Last name
- First name
- Middle name
Some inmates cannot be found due to safety and security concerns. If you can’t find an inmate, you can contact the CDCR’s identification unit Monday through Friday excluding holidays at 916-445-6713.
How to Talk to an Inmate
You will not be able to call and talk to an inmate directly. However, inmates will have access to telephones and be able to make collect calls to friends and family. Keep in mind that collect calls will be charged to your credit card or phone bill.
Visit an Inmate
If you wish to visit an inmate, you can easily sign up to see them online. The CDCR uses a system called VPASS to schedule visits. From the home page, you will scroll over offender info and go down to visit an inmate. If you have not registered, you will need to register in VPASS. You will need to use the inmate locator to find out what facility they are located in. After you have registered, you can schedule a day and time to visit with the offender.
Send Money to an Inmate
There are three ways you can send money to an inmate. To send money, you will want to look up the inmates CDCR number using the inmate locator and determine where the inmate is located using the facility locator.
- Lock Box: Send a money order online using Lock Box. Fill out the money order deposit form with sender name and address. Make check or money order payable to JPay. Mail to: JPay, 2202 South Figueroa St, Box #3001, Los Angeles, CA 90007
- EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer): This is a paid service, but is the fastest option.
- Mail Funds directly: You can also mail checks payable to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. You will want to include the inmate's name and CDCR number on the check. Mail to the inmate.
