The first step in finding out a friend or relative has been incarcerated is to find out which jail they are in. You can easily find out if a friend or loved one is at Los Angeles County Sheriff Jail in California through an online database.

You will want to visit the Los Angeles County Sheriff Jail homepage. Click on search for inmates. You will be redirected to a page where you will click on the inmate lookup tool.

Inmates who do not have money in their account for commissary will be provided envelopes, paper, and postcards each week. Inmates must make a request for such items by Wednesday in order to receive these items.

Keep in mind that all mail will be opened and inspected for contraband.

Talk on the phone: Inmates cannot receive incoming phone calls. However, they can make collect calls to friends and family. Be sure to send your phone number in a letter if they don’t know it by heart.

Visit an inmate: To visit an inmate at Los Angeles County Sheriff Jail, you must schedule a visitation appointment. To do this, you can call 213-473-6080, 213-473-6100 seven days a week from 10:30am to 3:30pm. Before scheduling a visit, you will want to look at the visitation guidelines and times. Keep the following in mind when scheduling a visit:

  • Inmates are only allowed 2 visits per month.

  • Only 1 child is permitted to visit at a time.

  • You must bring proper forms of identification for yourself and your child (birth certificate).

  • Attorneys can visit inmates as many times as needed.

  • You must cancel a scheduled visit two hours prior.

  • If you do not show up for a visit more than twice in 30 days or 3 consecutive times, your visitation may be suspended.

Let’s talk about a Commissary with the Los Angeles County Sheriff Jail in California. Every county jail has a commissary. This is where the inmates can buy extras that they may want, but don’t get on a daily basis in the jail. Items can be bought with money that is put into each inmate’s account. How to Send Money

Inmates in Los Angeles County Sheriff Jail are able to purchase additional items they may need at a store located in the jail. This store is called commissary. In order for inmates to purchase additional items from commissary, they must have money in their account.

If you wish to put money on an inmate’s commissary account, there are several ways you can do so.

  • You can deposit money into Kiosks located at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Jail.

  • Call 800-483-8314 to make a deposit over the phone.

  • Register for an online account at GTL’s ConnectNetwork online.

  • You can also download the GTL’s iPhone app to transfer money.

  • If you prefer to send money the old-fashioned way, you can send money through the mail with a money order. Keep the following in mind when choosing this option:

    • Money orders should be made payable to Los Angeles County Sheriff Jail Commissary

    • The inmate’s name, cell housing unit, date of birth, and gallery number must be on the money order.
