Cochise County jail was built in 1985 with 160 cells for inmates. There are 206 people currently confined there and an average daily population of 246. Some cells are currently double dunked with inmates who can handle each other. The jail at Bisbee is located at 203 Judd Drive in Bisbee, Arizona 85603. The jail does offer a medical facility with full-time medical care and mental health professionals. Religious services are also provided by part-time chaplains. The security level is considered high because the jail holds people who have committed misdemeanors all the way up to violent crime, rape, and murder. All inmates are intended to be held for a year or less and are waiting to be either sentenced or go out on bond. Both men and women are held at Cochise County Jail, most of which are in jail because of arrests within the municipal justice system.

Sheriff

Cochise County’s Sheriff Mark Dannels is on his second elected term as the sheriff of Cochise County. Dannels has been in law enforcement for 36 years. He has been on various tasks forces including the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, the Border Security Advisory Council, and many, many more.  He has also been awarded Deputy of the Year as well as Western States Deputy of the Year.

Dannels has three primary objectives in organizational development as shown with his participation with peace officer standards, border security, and community outreach. Sheriff Dannels is often helping plan events for kids, including Shop with a Cop so kids can get a better understanding and perception of police officers.

Commander

Commander Thomas Alinen has been in law enforcement for 42 years and has served in many positions. Alinen worked his way up from a patrolman to a chief, then retired and was hired by Dannels as the director of Support Services. Alinen is a graduate of the FBI academy and has a Masters in Information Systems. Alinen has helped develop and replace computer systems with the Cochise County justice system and even teaches computer science at Wayland Baptist University.

Cochise County Mugshots

The mugshots at Bisbee jail are searched a bit differently. From their website, one can access mugshots by clicking on the mugshots link. The mugshots, recent arrests, and other info are downloaded as a PDF which is searchable by using your keyboard or browser and control and F on your keyboard. The inmate list is very similar and is downloadable but not searchable from their website. The inmate list shows basic info including the first, middle, and last name, as well as the time incarcerated. The Cochise County mugshot list offers the reason why the individual is in jail but the inmate list does not offer the same info. The inmate list is for public use and is readily downloadable.

How does visiting work?

Visiting hours are essential to the mental health of both an inmate and their family and friends. Visiting can also be done in a secure manner that keeps the visitor safe from inmates, not including the one they are visiting, and sometimes the inmates safe from visitors.

On site visits are free. Inmates are allowed two twenty-minute visits per week, and not in the same day. Only three visitors are allowed per visit, including children. A valid government ID is needed for all who visit, including the birth certificate for children. Visitors are also required to provide the district attorney address for their home address.

At this time, on-site visitation is allowed only on three days. Sunday from 8:00am to 2:00PM, Thursday from 5:00PM to 9:00PM and Saturday from 8:00AM to 2:00PM. Cochise County Jail also offers Thanksgiving and Christmas day visits to their inmate list.

Cochise County calls video videos “At-Home” visits because the visitors can stay at home and visit via video. The hours are significantly wider from 8:00AM to 2:00PM and 3:00PM to 8:00PM most days. All video visits are recorded except for those with legal representatives. There is a fee for using video visits, which are offered through a third party service. The jail has been offering the service since 2004 and doesn’t list the prices to communicate with inmates via the service.

Visits must be arranged ahead of time and visitors are not to show up more than a half-hour before their scheduled time, and will be gently escorted out by personnel once they reach their time limit.

Volunteer

Cochise County Jail and Sheriff Dannels welcome volunteers who wish to help the inmate list at Cochise County Jail. Volunteers can help with a skill or educational background that might be considered valuable to inmates as a teachable skill, pastoral consideration, or offers psychological benefits from confinement. Volunteers are encouraged and must provide credentials and proof of their abilities.

Commissary and Money Gram

The jail offers a commissary for inmates to purchase non-essential items like personal hygiene products, stationery, playing cards and more. Money for inmates can be deposited via MoneyGram using the inmate ID. The jail also has a lockbox and deposit box in person for those preferring cash and not to use MoneyGram. Commissary profits are to be used only to purchase educational materials and other law items for inmates.
