The Clallam County Jail sits on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. This jail opened in the year 1980, and has been operational ever since. Over time, the original plans for the jail to only have space for 72 inmates expanded to add an inmate worker housing section and a chain gang. The jail’s design is reminiscent of what is known as a “pod” structure. Housing units center around the outdoor area in individual blocks. Inmates are given access to the yard in turns. The county’s name comes from the word Klallam, a Native American word used to describe strong tribes. The inmate roster includes individuals who have been convicted of crimes ranging from Murder I to possession-based. The compound itself is located in Port Angeles, Washington. The goal of the Clallam County Jail is to provide the community with a higher quality of life and security, while allowing inmates kept in the prison a path to rehabilitation.
