The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) runs the Nottoway Correctional Center, an all-male state prison in Burkeville, Nottoway County, Virginia.  It is a level III state prison that was established in 1984. The inmates joining this prison are received, classified, and assigned to their housing facilities. This inmate reception and classification includes undergoing mandatory drug tests and evaluating the inmate’s behavior, nature of the offense, and sentence duration to determine their appropriate security level classification. The inmates reside in 63 housing units comprising 262 single cells, 123 segregation units, 502 multiple-stay cells, and two dormitories that hold 1112 beds. Other facilities include a correctional enterprise building, a gymnasium, classrooms, greenhouses, dining halls, and administration blocks.

Nottoway Correctional Center has various inmate programs that facilitate smooth integration of inmates into prison life and subsequent re-entry into the society upon release. The programs are part of the treatment plan with distinct annual goals based on the inmate’s needs. These are religious, recreations, physical and mental health programs targeting positive behavioral change. Upon completion, the inmate earns credit for their good conduct and will count on reducing their sentences.  Second, the state prison has a low-security work center its non-disruptive offenders can work. These are inmates free of any violent behavior for the last 24 months before joining the work program.

Inmates may receive letters, greeting cards, postcards, and appropriate photos. Sending money, postage stamps, prepaid postage envelopes, nude or semi-nude images in the inmate postal mail is prohibited.  All incoming inmate mail is opened, searched, and read before being handed to the inmate. Any unauthorized mail or contraband items found are destroyed on arrival.

Visitation

Inmates at the Nottoway Correctional Center have access to scheduled contact, non-contact, and video visits. Anyone who wishes to visit an inmate must complete the visitation application. It entails filling out an online visitation application form and wait for an approval notification via return mail. Ensure you get the inmate’s correct full names and ID number from the offender locator. Then, you will need to quote your Social Security Number and attach your photo ID. The applicant should include details for a minor that they intend to bring along on the visiting day. The approval process takes up to 30 minutes.

Visiting hours at Nottoway Correctional Center is on Saturdays, Sundays, and State holidays for 6 hours each day. The visitors may see only one offender at a time unless multiple offenders are the visitors’ close family members. Carry a photo ID for identification, and maintain a modest and conservative dress code.

Video visitations are convenient for family members and friends who reside far or are not available on the regular visiting days and hours. Here, one should apply to the prison warden be on the Video Visiting List. Once approved, the facility unit head shall assign an appropriate video visit on a different day from the regular visits. The participant is to observe appropriate behavior during the video visit or risk getting suspended from this privilege for at least a year.
