To this end, there are a variety of educational and vocational courses made available to inmates who qualify.

In Buckingham Correctional Center, inmates are able to take educational courses in general subjects, as well as specialized programs. The prison offers treatment for those suffering with substance abuse, including Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. They also provide guidance for help with anger management and treatment of sex offenders. Vocational opportunities are designed for inmates to be able to stay productive while incarcerated. Inmates at Buckingham Correctional Center can take part in vocational training for useful trades, such as plumbing or electrical wiring. Other opportunities allow inmates to learn and train in commercial food preparation or other positions.

Visitation

The Virginia Department of Corrections acknowledges that inmates incarcerated in the Buckingham Correctional Center may have loved ones outside the prison who wish to remain in contact with the inmate. Visiting inmates at the Buckingham Correctional Center requires prior approval from the DOC. You must first submit the proper application online to be considered for a visit. Minors require an additional application to be submitted along with the application of their guardian. If you are not the guardian of the minor, you must produce a notarized statement with the other applications.

After submitting the application, you will be contacted by email with either the date and time that you will be approved to visit, or the reason for your denial of visit.

Visiting hours are on Saturdays and Sundays. The first letter of the inmates’ last names determines their place in the visiting schedule. You can call the Buckingham Correctional Center at (434) 391-5980 to confirm the current schedule.

When arriving for your visit, you will need to show a valid, government photo ID, such as a driver’s license. Other possible options include a military ID, passport, or other official ID given to you by the government.

When you enter the visiting area, you must surrender all items aside from your visitor’s pass, your vehicle key, up to $20 in coins, or essential breastfeeding items when applicable. Any other belonging will be left in a locker or the vehicle of the visitor.

Visitors will be searched to ensure they are not bringing any contraband items (paper money, food, packages, lottery tickets, negotiable items, any other items). These searches consist of pat-down frisks, canine searches, electronic scan, and other methods.

Visitors are not allowed to have contact with inmates except for a kiss, handshake, or embrace at the beginning and end of the visit. The prison will give reasonable consideration to allowing parents ot hold their young children.

What to Wear

You must follow the dress code in place at Buckingham Correctional Center for your visit to go smoothly. The safety and security of all inmates, visitors, and staff at the prison is the paramount concern of the Buckingham Correctional Center. Anything that appears to threaten the safety of one of these entities will be cause for ending the visit abruptly.

Visitors must wear underwear and foot wear. Clothing must cover your body entirely from the neck to the knees, and your clothing must not resemble inmate uniforms. Any technology such as cell phones, watches, smart watches, or other wearable tech is not allowed.

Clothing that exposes cleavage or form-fitting clothing is not allowed. Likewise, see-through materials are prohibited. You are not allowed to wear any clothing containing provocative or obscene graphics. Any outerwear such as coats, jackets, scarves, or other cold weather gear will be put in a space outside of the visiting area.

The Buckingham Correctional Center uses discretion to approve, deny, or cut short visits. They may also supply visitors with a smock to cover themselves if their clothing is not acceptable.

Video Visiting

Video visitation is available through the DOC’s contract with Assisting Families of Inmates. This organization allows friends and family members to chat with inmates through a video call. This kind of visit still requires the same forms and approval that in-person visits require.

Video visits are hosted at AFOI centers from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. These hours may not align with Buckingham Correctional Center’s specific visiting hours for your inmate. For more information on the process of video visitation and the associated fees, visit https://afoi.org/.

Buckingham Correctional Center Inmates

Inmates in the Buckingham Correctional Center are all male. The prison has a security level of 3-4. The average daily population of this close-custody prison is a little over 1000 inmates. In order for an inmate to be transferred to a prison with a lower security level, the inmate must have no disruptive behavior for at least the previous 24 months.

In the prison, inmates have access to a recreation facility, a dining hall, and vocational spaces such as the metal shop, laundry facilities, and landscaping areas.

Inmates in this prison have a single, multiple, or life sentence of 20 years or more. When they arrive at the prison, jail staff put the inmates through a series of tests to determine what kind of treatment and security they require while they are in the prison. This determines what kind of programs the inmates will be enrolled in while incarcerated. This plan is re-evaluated on an annual basis, and is updated when necessary to reflect the inmate’s progress.
