Types of Correctional Facilities in Virginia
Those who are housed in a prison in the Virginia Department of Corrections have their inmate records housed by the VADOC. Inmates who are in federal prison can be searched in the database provided by the state.
Those inmates who are housed in prison, not ran by the state, are going to have their records maintained by the city or county jail that they’re in. Here is how you do an inmate search and figure out how to communicate with an inmate.
How to do an Inmate Search
A prison search or inmate search in the Virginia State Department of Corrections is easier than you can imagine. You simply search for the inmate by the first name, last night, or ID number.
Additionally, it would help if you have the inmates BOP register, INS, DCDC, or FBI number.
If you have this information, it’s much easier to find an inmate. If you have troubles locating an inmate, you might be able to contact the state prison, in which they’re located.
If you get many results from a single search, you can filter out the inmate’s name by using specific information such as incarceration date, and the crime committed.

VA offenders search
Virginia offenders search will give you records that include all the information about individuals incarcerated in correctional centers, and jails in Virginia.
You will get the offenders status and their location.
Most of the information is readily available to the general public upon request. Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) will oversee all the operations of correctional facilities and state prisons in Virginia.
VADOC provides an offender locator search on the website, which will help you find a loved one that may be in jail. The unique seven-digit offenders ID that is given to each inmate will help you find an inmate easily.
Moreover, each city and county jail in Virginia has its own locators. They are available on WebPages that host this information. You should visit the county’s webpage to lookup an inmate.
If there is no way for you to search for an inmate online, you can go to the facility directly and enquire about an individual.
VA Dept. Of Corrections Inmate Lookup
Friends and families can look up a loved one and their current location by visiting the facility’s website. Most of the facilities in the state update their information on a daily basis to ensure that the information is accurate and complete.
The VA Dept of Corrections inmate lookup has all the information including race, date of birth, and the release date.
How to Visit with an Inmate
If you have done your prison search and inmate locator, then visiting with an inmate may be your next step.
Before you can visit with an inmate, you need to fill out an application. You can only visit an inmate if you have been approved. You will also need clearance from the BOP. In some instances, when an inmate is in a new prison there may be no visiting list yet. In such a case, immediate family members will be verified using available information.
However, if the information is insufficient, then visitation into any of the facilities will be denied. Ensure you call the prison before you visit to confirm your permission into the facility.
Your application will expire after 36 months; in that case, you will need to put in a new application.
You must check with each institution to figure out when their visitation schedules are. Go here to get all the details on visitations in the Virginia State Department of Corrections.
How to Complete a Video Visitation
Friends and family can meet with an inmate through video visitation. Traveling long distances can be expensive for friends and family, this is a good solution to that problem.
Each inmate that wants to participate in video visitation needs to be eligible. If you’d like to get a more in-depth review of what is or isn’t allowed visitation wise, go here.
The visits should be scheduled and paid for in advance. There are two types of video visitation that are allowed:
At-home video visits
You can conduct these visits at the comfort of your home using your laptop, mobile device, or PC. You will save travel expenses, parking fees, long lines, and a lot of time.
On-site Video Visits
Video visits will be conducted at visitation stations at a particular station. For on-site video visits, you will have to travel. You will have to schedule, register, and pay for it in advance.
How to Send Mail
As a civilian, you’re allowed to communicate with inmates in the Virginia State Department of Corrections via mail. In fact, it’s encouraged!
Just be cautioned that sending mail to the prison system means it’s subjected to being searched.
Also, all mail sent to the Virginia State Department of Corrections is copied, and the photocopies are given to the inmate.
If for some reason the mail has been classified as unauthorized, the mail will be sent back to the sender with a note explaining why it was sent back.
You can get a detailed list of what is okay and not okay to send right here.
