Potter County Jail is a medium-security correction facility situated at 13100 NE 29th Amarillo, Texas. It is a county detention center locally run by the Potter County Sheriff’s Department. Inmates are temporarily housed here as they await their trials and court sessions in the local justice system. Consequently, inmates are housed here for not more than two years. In case n inmate court journey warrants more than two years of incarceration, they are transferred to other state or BOP-operated correctional facilities. This jail collects inmates from the US Marshal’s Service, the Amarillo Police Department, and nearby towns or municipalities that do not have their own big detention structures.
Potter County Jail was opened in 1995 and features a 125,000 square foot facility with a bed capacity of 576 inmates in the general population unit, 27 beds infirmary, and two violent offenders’ cells. Each year the facility boast around 35, 000 but some are transferred to other facilities after their trials while others are released on bail.
Inmate Programs at Potter County Jail
Potter County Jail believes in inmate rehabilitation, and the facility does all it can with the help of the sheriff’s department to help inmates turn their lives around. Consequently, inmates held here are offered some rehabilitation programs that change their lives and help them pass time in jail. Some of the programs offered here include:
- Life Skills: inmates at this facility are taught general life skills to arm them with ways to handle daily life. These focus on being positive and adopting healthy coping skills in life.
- Illness, Management, and Recovery (IMR): this is a mental health program that helps inmates with mental health issues to overcome their problems.
- Houses of Healing: this is a group program that helps inmates to heal emotionally.
- Seeking Safety: this is another intensive group program that targets female inmates with substance abuse issues and trauma.
- Sharing Hope: female inmates are taught religious values to overcome their destructive behavior through sharing God’s love and hope. They are encouraged to adopt positive living and become better members of society.
The above group programs have proven to be incredibly effective, and as of 2020, about 174 inmates had graduated successfully. Inmates are also offered GED classes that they can freely make time for.
Visitation
Inmates are permitted to see one visitor per day for a visitation session of about 30mminutes in this facility. Visitors cannot bring any items to the visitation area, and they must dress modestly to be allowed to see their loved ones. They must also call ahead to schedule their visit with the authorities, and on the visiting day, they have to bring along valid identification documents. While at the facility, the visitors are also expected to conduct themselves with decorum. You will not be allowed to argue loudly and rudely with an inmate. Failure to observe the visitation rules can lead to denial of a visit.
The visitation hours are:
- Monday- Friday — 7:30 am to 9:00 pm.
- Saturday -Sunday— 7:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Jail Commissary

This facility provides basic needs that an inmate could survive on while incarcerated here, but this might not be enough. The commissary items make life a little bearable for the inmates.
