Types of Correctional Facilities in South Carolina

If someone you love or know is serving a sentence in a South Carolina prison, they will be overseen by the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC). Using a centralized inmate database, you can easily search for an inmate.

Keep in mind that not all offenders will be in prison. If an offender is serving a sentence in county jails, police jails, or city jails, you will not find them on the DOC website. You will need to visit their respective sites.

Below, you will find information about the South Carolina Department of Corrections, find out how to search for an inmate, and stay connected.

South Carolina DOC Mission

You will find that all state prisons have their own mission. The mission of the South Carolina DOC is to protect the citizens by confining offenders in controlled facilities. They also provide rehabilitative and self-improvement opportunities to prepare inmates to reintegrate into society.

How to Search for an Inmate

In order for you to stay in contact with an inmate or send money, you will need to do a quick inmate search.

From the South Carolina Department of Corrections homepage, you will need to look at the top right-hand corner of the page. Next to home, you will click on inmate search.

Then, click on search for incarcerated inmate to begin your search. Fill in as much information as you can about the inmate to complete a search.

Once you have found the offender, you will want to write down their SCDC ID number, and the facility where they are located for future information.

How to Stay in Contact with an Inmate

Staying in contact with an inmate is key to their success and rehabilitation. You can keep in contact in several different ways.

Phone: Inmates are allowed to make collect phone calls to landline phones. If you have a cell, you will need to get a prepaid account with Connect Network for them to call you.

Electronic Messaging: Now you can send electronic messages to inmates if you need to get an urgent message to them. You can use Connect Network for this service as well.

Visitation: If you wish to visit an inmate, you will need to call 803-896-1838 and press 1 to speak with someone about a visitor application.

Mail: To send mail to an inmate, you will need to address it to the facility where the inmate is located. Put the inmates first and last name as well as their ID number.

How to Send Money

Family and friends are able to make deposits into an inmate’s Cooper Trust Fund account. To do this, you will need to register with JPay to send money online.

You can also send in a money order, but you will need a deposit slip from JPay and send all money order to JPay at P.O. Box 260177, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026.
