The Beaufort County Detention Center is located in Beaufort, South Carolina. The detention center’s address is 100 Ribault Rd, Beaufort SC.  It can be reached by calling 843-255-5200. It is a medium-security facility that offers short-term housing to offenders who are being held before their trial.

Over 80% of the inmates at the facility on any given day are in pre-trial status. The remaining 20% of inmates will be transferred to another location to serve their sentences or are waiting for release. The average length of stay in the facility is 11 days. A judge will see all inmates who have been charged within the first 24 hours they are at the facility. At the time of an inmate’s first hearing, the judge will set a bond if applicable.  The individual will also be advised on contacting legal counsel and will be informed of their rights.

Direct Supervision

In 1992 it was opened to operate specifically as a direct supervision operation.  Each housing unit has an officer tasked explicitly with supervising and preventing potentially dangerous or inappropriate inmate behavior.  The facility and its staff strive to maintain a safe environment for everyone within the jail.

Inmates are transferred after their sentencing unless they receive sentences for less than 90 days.  Inmates whom the Family Court sentences will not be transferred and will be allowed to serve their sentence at the detention center. Additionally, inmates may be returned to the facility after being transferred to state custody under certain conditions.

To meet the requirements, an inmate must:

  • Have no violent offenses
  • Have no behavior violations during the incarceration
  • Have ties to the Beaufort community
  • Have no medical or mental health concerns
  • Have a sentence no longer than ten years.

Beaufort Inmate Inquiry

The detention center offers an inmate lookup service to all members of the public through its official website. While no offender search tool is available on this website, the population lists can be sorted to help identify a specific inmate.

The system allows the user to lookup inmates booked within the last 72 hours or 90 days.  It also offers a list of inmates released for the past 15 days. Finally, the current population can be sorted by either the prisoner’s last name or booking date.

Beaufort County Detention Center also participates in the national VINE program through the State of South Carolina. VINE stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday.  Through this system, anyone who is a victim of a crime can register to receive information or be notified when specific custody status changes occur.

A victim may sign up to receive notifications by calling 1-866-727-2846 or visiting the VINE registration website. Once registration is complete, you will receive a telephone call or email notification whenever the specific inmate’s status changes.

Inmate Rules and Services

Every individual receives an orientation session when they are processed into the facility. At this orientation, the prisoner is given an inmate handbook covering all of the facility’s regulations.

Money

While personal property is not allowed to remain in a prisoner’s custody, they can purchase items through the center’s commissary program.  Inmates can receive money to use for these purchases from their friends or family.  This money can be sent directly to the jail by mail through the postal system, or deposits can be made online.  When sending money to the jail, be aware that only money orders or cashier’s checks can be accepted.  To make an online deposit create an account at www.jailpackstore.com and create an account. Be sure that the inmate’s name and number are connected to your account before making the deposit.  Customer support for this service can be reached by calling 912-427-9022.

              Mail

Inmates at the facility have access to the postal service, and they may receive unlimited mail.  Mail must have a return address, and it will be inspected when it arrives at the jail.  Also, the following rules will apply to incoming mail:

  1. No packages can be sent without approval.
  2. Books and magazines must be sent from the publisher directly.
  3. No photographs larger than 5×7 will be allowed. Only six in total will be allowed.
  4. No oversized mail or cards.
  5. Perfumed letters will not be accepted.

Medial Care and Food

Physical exams are conducted whenever an inmate is admitted into the jail.  This exam includes a test for TB and any other test that might be medically necessary. Inmates may ask for medical services if they become necessary, and a member of the medical team is available each day during business hours. This medical team will also oversee all prescriptions brought into the facility for each inmate. Before a medication can be stored and dispensed, the doctor must verify it is legitimate and necessary.

The jail provides three meals daily and will consider request for special diets due to medical reasons or religious custom.  Staff will investigate any claims made about specific diets and must be able to verify those claims before the request can be honored.

              Telephone

Inmates each have access to telephone service. Phones are installed in each cell, and all calls are collect calls.  Calls are all recorded and monitored. They are also limited to 10 minutes each. An account can be set up with the center’s phone company. This account can have money deposited to it which will pay the charges for the collect call.  Call 1-888-8407 to set up an account.

Visitation Procedures

Visitation is available for all inmates. See the official website for the rotating visitation schedule or reach out directly to the facility by calling 843-255-5182 to see when a prisoner’s visitation days occur.
