Dedicated to truly helping the individuals who become incarcerated at this location, Dauphin County Prison provides many services to its community. The prison is located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and vows to do everything it can to serve the county and state. On an average day, about 1000 inmates will be in the facility, where they are offered a number of programs to help them reform.

Dauphin County Prison gives its inmates the chance to better themselves, instead of simply locking them away from society. The goal of the prison is to equip inmates with the tools they need to live happy, fulfilling lives as members of the community once they have carried out their sentence.

As the prison is run by the county, inmates incarcerated here will only have a maximum sentence of three years. Inmates with sentences exceeding this time limit will be sent to state prison instead.

Programs Offered

In order to maintain the rights and dignity of inmates in Dauphin County Prison, they are given the opportunity to be a part of a number of rehabilitative programs designed to help both the inmate and society. These programs provide an invaluable resource for the inmates.

For inmates that are struggling with addiction, Dauphin County Prison offers a series of counseling programs designed to help them break the destructive cycle. By helping end their addictions, the prison gives inmates a better chance of not falling into their old lifestyles, which reduces the recidivism rate of the prison. This makes the community safer and saves tax money at the same time.

For inmates who are able to work, the public service projects undertaken by the Dauphin County Prison are a powerful way to turn their lives around. These work tasks range from picking up litter to shoveling snow for members of the public that are unable to do so. Inmates can also help grow produce which is then sent to local soup kitchens and homeless shelters to feed the needy.

Inmates are also offered educational courses. These classes teach the inmates valuable life skills, such as job-searching and financial literacy. The goal of these classes is to give inmates a chance to land a job after their release to become financially independent, tax-paying individuals.

Medical Services

Dauphin County Prison takes the health of its inmates very seriously. Inmates are able to fill out requests to be included in a routine sick call that takes place five days a week. This service allows them to be seen by a physician, who will refer them to a specialist, if needed.

All medical staff on the premises have training for emergency medical situations. They are able to address any medical situation that may come up and the prison will provide secure transport to a medical facility if it is needed by an inmate.

Sheriff Department

The Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office is located on the first floor of the Dauphin County Courthouse. The current sheriff is Nicholas Chimienti, Jr. By running the Dauphin County Prison, the Sheriff’s Office is able to maintain the safety, health, and human rights of prisoners incarcerated in the Dauphin County Prison.

In addition to overseeing the prison, the Sheriff’s Department secures the transportation of inmates from the courthouse to the prison, patrols and investigates crimes, defends the public from harm, and issues concealed carry permits.

To contact the Sheriff in Dauphin County, you can call them at (717) 780-6590 or fax them at (717) 780-6557.

Sending Money

In order for inmates to make purchases at the commissary, they require funds in their account with the prison. If your friend or family member has been incarcerated and you would like to support them in this way, you can do so either by depositing funds in the kiosk located in the lobby or online.

To deposit funds into an inmate’s account through the kiosk, you must travel in-person to the prison. AT the kiosk, you can deposit funds after entering an inmate’s information. To look up an inmate, you need either their date of birth or DCP number.

If you would prefer to deposit funds online, you can do so easily by visiting http://deposits.jailatm.com. This website makes it simple to add funds to your inmate’s account. Do NOT add www in front of the web address. Using the online deposit function will require you to set up an account beforehand. To do so, you must enter your driver’s license number and your social security number. When filling out the payment information online, make sure that you are entering your own information, instead of the inmate’s information.

Always double-check that you are sending your money to the correct inmate before you finalize your deposits, no matter which method you chose.
