In Salem, Oregon, the Santiam Correctional Institution provides security for the community while giving inmates a chance to set their lives on the right path. The building used by the Santiam Correctional Institution was used as award for the Oregon State Hospital to contain mentally ill individuals since its establishment in 1946. In 1960, it changed hands and became part of the Fairview Home, where it was known as Prigg Cottage.

Overcrowding of prisons in 1977 saw the use of Prigg Cottage as a space for inmates in minimum custody. This began the process of converting the complex into a detention center for offenders. In 1990, the detention center officially became the Santiam Correctional Institution.

The goal of the Santiam Correctional Institution is to help inmates reorient themselves and become productive members of society once their sentence has finished. To this end, Santiam Correctional Institution has implemented a number of programs for the rehabilitation of its inmates.

The prison itself is nine square acres within a security fence.

Programs

To lower recidivism rates and give inmates the best chance at a fulfilling life out of prison, the jail provides programs and classes for inmates who are incarcerated. These programs give inmates opportunities to improve their lives. The Santiam Prison offers cognitive programs, education, religious services, health services, work assignments, substance abuse programs, and transition programs to give inmates the best care possible.

The prison offers work release programs to inmates who qualify. Inmates are given the chance to work while incarcerated for entities that have a contract with the prison. This includes local government, private corporations, and state agencies within 60 miles of the prison.

Santiam Correctional Institution also provides religious services for its inmates. The prison chaplain is able to provide religious counsel for those in need.

If an inmate is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, they can attend the treatment programs offered by Santiam Prison. Other medical needs are also met through the prison’s medical staff, ensuring the safety of every individual within the prison.

Inmate Search

While it can be disorienting for a friend or family member to be incarcerated, you will still be able to keep in touch with them. If you are looking for a specific inmate incarcerated in the Santiam Correctional Institution, you try performing an inmate search.

To look for someone through the online inmate search, you can use the Oregon Department of Corrections website. You will need to be able to provide at least part of the inmate’s name. If you are unsure about the proper spelling of a name, you can fill in what you do know and add an asterisk (*) where the unknown letters are.

Searching through the Department of Corrections website lets you view the arrest record, mugshots, date of birth, and other information about the inmate. If you have further questions about the location of a certain inmate, you can call the jail itself to ask about them.

Visiting Santiam

Santiam Correctional Institution acknowledges the fact that many people outside of the prison may want to visit a loved one who has been incarcerated there. They offer a visiting service for inmates. The goal of this program is to allow inmates to stay connected to those important to them, while ensuring the safety of everyone involved. All visiting processes have their foundation in keeping everyone safe.

If you would like to visit the Santiam Prison, you first have to fill out a visitation form and have it approved by the staff at the prison. Visiting hours are on weekends. On Saturdays and Sundays, visiting is available between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

When you arrive at the prison, you must verify your identity by providing a current photo ID. It is recommended that this is the only item you bring inside the prison. You will also have to walk through a metal detector upon arrival to ensure that you are not trying to smuggle any kind of dangerous item into the prison. This may be followed up by a pat-down or other kind of search.

When visiting Santiam, it is important to wear the correct clothing. A dress code for visitors exists to secure the safety of the inmates, visitors, and jail staff. You will not be allowed to wear clothing that has metal of any kind. You will also not be allowed to wear clothing that hugs your shape or is see-through. Clothing that has threatening graphics is prohibited. Do not wear legwear that is more than three inches above the knee. You will also not be allowed to wear shoes that have any kind of removable pieces.

These rules are in place to provide maximum safety for all involved. If the jail staff feels at any time that this safety is possibly under threat, visits will be ended abruptly.

Prison Commissary

While inmates have all of their basic needs met in the prison, there may be some items that they miss. If this is the case, they can purchase items form the jail commissary. This commissary supplies inmates with items such as extra underwear and socks, certain food items, and other quality of life products. In order for an inmate to buy something from the commissary, they need to have the appropriate amount of money in their account.

Money

You can send money to inmates at the Santiam Prison to allow them to buy items from the commissary. The system that this prison uses is JPay. You can visit their website here: www.jpay.com. You will need to provide the information of the inmate you would like to send money to. Always make sure that the information that you have entered is correct, and check it again before you submit your payment request to ensure that you are sending money to the correct inmate. If you have further questions about sending money to an inmate or contacting them, you can call the jail at (503)-378-2144.
