The Mayes County Jail and Mayes County Sheriff’s Office were both founded in 1907, the same year that Oklahoma became one of the states of the USA. The jail was named after Samuel Houston Mayes, the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1895 to 1899. There are eight cities and towns within Mayes County: Adair, Chouteau, Disney, Langley, Locust Grove, Pryor, Salina, and Spavinaw. The Mayes County Sheriff’s Office provides honest and professional law enforcement, community safety, and public service. It enforces the Oklahoma law in a fair and unbiased manner based on the statutory and judicial limits of the Sheriff’s authority in the county. The Mayes County Sheriff’s Office handles and distributes various legal and court documents within the county. These civil documents range from protective orders, small claims, writs of assistance, subpoenas for court cases, and summons. The Mayes County Sheriff’s Office has ten different departments dedicated to serving the Oklahoma community. The departments include administration, command staff, criminal interdiction unit (CIU), criminal investigation (CID), dispatch, the official Mayes County Jail, the K-9 division, the missing persons department, the patrol deputies, and the reserve deputy.

Currently, there are three members of the command staff: Sheriff Mike Reed, Undersheriff Tim Thompson, and Captain Rod Howell. They oversee the other departments, including Carolyn Dixon and Valerie Taylor in the administration department.

Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU)

The Mayes County Sheriff’s Office has a Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU). This unit is responsible for investing and prosecuting people that break the laws regarding illegal narcotics. This can include anything like the production, distribution, transportation, and chronic use of illegal drugs. It also includes any money laundering from drug proceeds, which is typically associated with drug and gang offenses.

The investigators in the Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU) are highly skilled and professionally trained in techniques used to combat illegal drug use and illegal drug trafficking. Some of the investigators are certified narcotics detectives that make undercover purchases or controlled purchases, conduct stings, conduct reverse operations, and gather information on potential criminals. All the investigators that work in the Criminal Interdiction Unit collaborate with the Drug Enforcement Administration known as DEA and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. As part of the Mayes County Sheriff’s Office, this unit also works with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics Dangerous Drugs and the 12^th District Task Force when necessary.

Criminal Interdiction Unit investigations need surveillance, undercover operations, information analysis, and search and arrest warrant services. Because of the techniques they need, the Criminal Interdiction Unit also works with the Criminal Investigation Division.

Criminal Investigation (CID)

The Criminal Investigation Department of the Mayes County Sheriff’s Office conducts the initial investigation of most crimes. This is done by the Uniform Patrol Deputy, who also files an Offense Report of any findings. All reports are processed by the Mayes County Sheriff’s Office reporting system and reviewed by the Investigations Division department. Major Rod Howell, who leads the Investigation Division, reviews each report before deciding whether the case will be assigned to an investigator or will be closed. There are many factors that influence his decision, including things like physical evidence, viable leads, and witnesses.

The Criminal Investigation division always has an investigator ready and all call 24/7 for every single day of the year. The investigator on duty can be called to examine any crime, offense, or crime scene. There is a schedule of rotating investigators to ensure that the community always has somebody to rely on.
