With a total inmate capacity of 850, the Craven Correctional Institution serves the area of Vanceboro, North Carolina by providing a secure lockup for offenders. Located in Craven County, the prison is a medium-security detention facility for males. It was dedicated in 1996 and has been operational since. The prison cost $24.3 million to build. This prison is one of North Carolina’s biggest inmate processing facilities. When felons are convicted, they are sent to Craven Correctional Institution for processing before being assigned to a different prison, work program, or other correctional entity.

Craven Correctional Institution sees more than 400 inmates processed every month. Typically these inmates will stay for about a period of three to four weeks before they are given their assignments. SA such, inmates are generally incarcerated in this detention facility for a short time. The assignment process involves inmates being tested, interviewed, and otherwise assessed to determine what their best correctional program would be. Inmates are then transported securely to another, more permanent facility to serve out their sentences.

Inmate Package

If someone that you know has been incarcerated in the Craven Correctional Institution, you can send them mail or packages to show that you care. Prohibited items or content will not be delivered. The Craven Correctional Institute will search each item sent through the mail to ensure that it does not contain any forbidden material. This includes both incoming and outgoing mail from the prison. However, incoming mail from an inmate’s legal counsel or other legal aid will be opened in the presence of the inmate before it is searched.

Craven Correctional Institution encourages friends and family members to write to incarcerated loved ones. Please make sure that you have filled out the envelope correctly, as letters and mail that does not meet the proper standards will not be delivered. You must include the prison ID number of the offender on the envelope (also known as the OPUS number).

To correctly fill out an envelope for delivery to Craven Correctional Institution, follow this format:

Inmate’s full name and prison ID number
Craven Correctional Institution
PO Box 839
Vanceboro, NC 28586

Always add the return address to your mail, or it will not be delivered. By following these steps, you have the best chance of your mail reaching the correct location.

Packages

If you would like to send an aid package to an inmate, North Carolina lets you select items from a catalog to be delivered. Homemade care packages will not be delivered. However, the catalog has a large selection of items that you can send directly to an inmate. All of these items have already been approved by the correctional facility, so you can be sure that they will all reach their destination.

Packages that you can send can range from items such as food to religious items. If inmates are placed under special status that does not allow them to receive mail, you will be refunded the cost of your package. It will not be delivered.

Inmate Search

The list of inmates at Craven Correctional is always changing. As this is a temporary holding facility, inmates typically leave within a few weeks of their arrival. You may wish to locate an inmate to confirm their custody status within the prison. To do so, you can utilize the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Offender Public Information Offender Search.

To effectively use this online search engine, you should have as much information about the inmate as possible. This includes items such as:

  • Last name
  • First name
  • Offender number
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Ethnic group
  • Birthdate
  • Age range
  • Offender Status

While not all of this information is required to perform a search, entering as much information as you can provide you with the most accurate search results possible. This tool is useful if you are a victim of a crime and want to check that the offender is still in custody, or if you simply want to check the status of a loved one who is currently incarcerated in North Carolina’s prison system.
