Commissary Purchases

Inmates can also purchase snacks at the prison commissary. Inmates can also purchase spices and sauces to put on food provided by FCI Butner Medium II. Snacks can be stored in the inmate’s cell in sealed containers.

How Can Inmates Make Money?

Inmates need to rely on having their own money to make commissary purchases and to keep up with their financial obligations. Inmates can make money through job assignments or getting money deposits from family and friends.

Inmate Job Assignments

All inmates are expected to have a job assignment while incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner. Most job assignments offer to pay inmates on a sliding scale. Inmates are responsible for getting to their job assignments on time.

The first job assignment for many inmates is in institutional maintenance in food service or the maintenance shop. Inmates at FCI Butner Medium II also have job opportunities outside of the prison address through UNICOR. There is a waiting list to get a job through UNICOR and priority usually goes to inmates with a high financial obligation.

UNICOR is a factory system operated by the Federal Prison Industries. These factories make high-quality clothing and electronic products for the federal government. Skills learned in these factories can translate well to getting jobs outside of prison.

Money From Family and Friends

Inmates can also get money deposits from family and friends outside of prison. Inmates cannot carry cash with them while incarcerated. People outside of prison cannot send money directly to the inmate at the FCI Butner Medium II prison address. All money deposits need to be handled specifically.

Any money sent through the mail has to be sent as a money order through USPS. The money order needs to be addressed to the central processing facility in Iowa, not the prison address in North Carolina. The money order will be processed into the inmate’s commissary account.

Money can also be deposited into an inmate’s account through a transfer from MoneyGram or Western Union. Transfers can be made online or over the phone with the inmate’s name and eight-digit registration number. Any transfer made before 9:00 pm eastern time should be processed with two to four hours and processing happens seven days a week.

Psychology Treatment

All units have a psychologist assigned to them to help manage psychological and mental health problems. Inmates undergo a psychological screening when entering the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner to determine what psychological services the inmate needs.

If an inmate’s incarceration is directly related to drug or alcohol addiction, they will have to attend a forty-hour drug program. This is also for inmates who are recommended drug treatment through the court. These programs are designed to help inmates find the problems that drugs may have contributed to their lives while learning the tools necessary to fight addiction.

There are several counseling activities for inmates who feel that they need to use them. Inmates can get informal counseling from staff or receive more specialized counseling from a psychologist. Inmates can also attend Alcoholics Anonymous and other group therapy sessions.

FCI Butner Medium II has a fully staffed medical staff with psychiatrists that can help inmates develop plans to treat psychological problems. The psychiatrists can be seen by appointment by any inmate with a referral by a psychologist. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication that an inmate may need to manage their mental health.

Education for Inmates

FCI Butner Medium II wants to help inmates achieve educational success. Inmates who do not have a high school diploma or a GED are required to take literacy classes to pass the test. These classes last for 120 days and students who do not pass the exam are re-enrolled in the class until they pass.

Inmates who speak English as a second language are required to take English courses that will help them function in English speaking environments. Inmates need to pass the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Survey to complete the program. These classes are designed to help inmates achieve at least an eighth grade level of English functionality.

Some inmates have children and for these inmates, they can take the parenting courses offered by the facility. These programs focus on strengthening familial bonds and childhood development. They also assist inmates in keeping parent-child bonds strong while the parent is in prison.

Once inmates have earned a GED and passed the English fluency exams to satisfaction, they can choose what educational path they want to take. Inmates can take classes provided by the Vance-Granville Community College and Durham Technical College typing and computer skills.

Inmates can also study carpentry, office system technology, and automotive technology through the Vance-Granville Community College. These courses teach valuable skills that will help inmates get high-paying jobs once they’re released from the Federal Correctional Institute of Butner.

Leisure Services

Inmates at FCI Butner Medium II can take advantage of the many recreational and leisure activities at the facility. They can play sports or tabletop games where inmates can learn how to be competitive in a healthy manner. Keeping physically fit can help inmates manage stress and develop good interpersonal relationships with other inmates.

Inmates can also play musical instruments or learn new hobbies through the hobby-craft programs. These hobbies teach inmates skills that may lead to career development but will also provide inmates an outlet for creativity that can help them manage their mental health. Inmates can mail their completed projects home to show their loved ones what they’re learning.

Inmates can also engage with the religious practices and faith from their community or discover new ones. FCI Butner Medium II has chaplains and services for several religious practices. Inmates can attend services and even convert to a new faith. The penitentiary will accommodate the faith to the best of their abilities when it comes to dietary and worship needs.

The facility also has a library that inmates can use for recreation or learning. The leisure library offers books that an inmate can check out for personal reading. The library also includes magazines, periodicals, and reference books that inmates can read in their spare time.

There is also a legal library at FCI Butner Medium II where inmates can obtain and make copies of legal documents. An inmate who wants to use the legal library services needs to get an account from the library coordinator. Materials in the legal library cannot be checked out and can only be used in the library.

Release Planning

The goal of FCI Butner Medium II is to help inmates live healthy and successful lives once released from prison. The educational services are designed to help inmates learn skills that will help them find jobs after their release. Some job assignments in prison can also help inmates learn valuable skills and get the experience that will help them get a job.

Staff will also work with inmates to address concerns about life after release. These services will help inmates address current community, family, and career issues. They can help inmates plan for a successful release and work with the inmate’s community to find ways to integrate successfully.

The library services also have career planning materials that can help an inmate plan for what jobs they may want to consider when they’re released. Inmates can also get skills training and certificates for jobs that they’re interested in to get ready for job hunting after moving from the prison address. They can also learn how to write resumes and cover letters.

Inmates can also meet with probation and parole officers to learn what those responsibilities will be like. Inmates will also get the opportunity to learn what their legal rights and responsibilities will be like upon release. Inmates may be released to a half-way house when first out of prison to adjust to life away from prison and incarceration.
