The facility opened in early 1990 and is the state’s first “New Generation” direct supervision detention center. This prison can accommodate a maximum of 274 inmates and the building spans a large 122,900 square feet.

This detention center is a medium-security facility that is mainly used as a location to hold inmates that are waiting for their sentence, trial, or both. For the most part, inmates will remain in this facility for less than two years before being moved to a different one or released.

High Point Detention Center also can bring in inmates from surrounding towns and municipalities who do not have their own long-term way to hold them.

Visitation at Guilford County High Point Detention Center

As of right now, all visitation has been suspended until further notice due to the ongoing pandemic and community health concerns due to COVID-19. However, assuming visitation will resume soon, here are the normal visiting hours for the detention center.

Tuesdays through Fridays visitors will be allowed to see inmates from 9am to 10:30am and Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7:30pm to 10pm. For inmates that are in disciplinary isolation visitors will be allowed to see them on Wednesdays from 9am to 10:30am and Thursdays from 7:30pm to 10pm.

Visitors will be expected to follow the dress code at this facility and are not permitted to wear revealing clothing or clothing that is colored similarly to inmate attire as well.

To visit an inmate, your name must be on their approved visitation list, which is done during intake by the inmate themselves. Two names only can be placed on this list at a time and the list can be updated once every 30 days.

Visitors below the age of 18 have to be accompanied by an adult unless they are legally and visitors may come in once per week. Those who live over 50 miles away from High Point Detention Center and are not on the visitation list can receive a “one-time-only” visit under special circumstances.

All visitors will need to display a valid photo ID upon entry as well. Examples of a valid photo ID include a state driver’s license or current passport. Documents without a photograph like a birth certificate or social security card will not be accepted and your visit will be terminated.

Sending Mail to an Inmate

Inmates can only receive letters that have a full return address on the envelope. They can also receive up to five photographs that are no larger than 5 inches by 7 inches per mailing. Greeting cards are also allowed so long as there are no glitter or sound-making devices on them.

Mail that is considered unsanitary will not be approved and any newspaper clippings, stickers on the envelopes that are not an address label, calendars, solicitations and other various types of mail will also not be approved to be received.

Magazine and newspaper subscriptions can be bought for the inmate, however, these must come straight from the publisher. Envelopes or packages with these inside them will not be received by the inmate.

Inmates can receive mail Mondays through Fridays with the exception of federally recognized holidays. Also, they can receive up to five paperback books that are shipped directly from an internet distributor, the publisher, or book club.

Some examples of breaches in security done through mail are items that promote criminal activity, contain nudity or sexual content of some kind, ideas for escape, or contraband of any kind.

Items that are not received by the inmates will be sent back to the return address and to make sure your mail is delivered in a timely manner, ensure the inmate’s ID number is always included.
