In the Dutchess District of New York, you’ll find the Downstate Correctional Facility. The Downstate Correctional Facility is a law enforcement facility that only keeps male offenders. As of 2021, the Downstate Correctional Facility can only legally keep 1,234 inmates at any given time.

When it comes to the facility’s inmates, you should note that the Downstate Correctional Facility restricts all programs and medicines to their discretion. However, all inmates who need medical help will get medical help from a prison doctor available on-site.

Typical inmates in the Downstate Correctional Facility typically are held here for three weeks. After that time, inmates are then transferred to their permanent correctional facility. Only a few inmates will get kept in the Downstate Correctional Facility for a longer-term sentence.

The Downstate Correctional Facility offers an extensive amount of programs to help inmates gain jobs once released. These programs include:

  • Culinary Programs
  • Canine Programs
  • GED Courses
  • Other Vocational Programs

Facility Visiting Hours

Visiting hours are typically between 8:30 am to 3:15 pm. There will be NO VISITATION starting at 11:15 am to 12:45 pm. This is the time the inmates will be eating lunch. No visitors will be allowed in. All visitors who are in will be escorted out into the lobby.

The Downstate Correctional Facility will stop accepting visitors at 2:15 pm. No visitors will be allowed back after this time.

COVID-19 Visitation Update

With the pandemic happening globally, the Downstate Correctional Facility has decided to temporarily suspend their visitation starting December 20, 2020, at 3 pm. The visitation will resume once the pandemic gets under control and safe for those working in the facility and the inmates who are serving time in the facility.

What Happens If the Room is Overcrowded?

If the visiting room starts to get overcrowded, you should know that there are procedures that the Downstate Correctional Facility will have to follow.

First, the facility will ask people who are ready to leave visitation to leave.

If the facility cannot elevate the number of people in the visiting room, they will start removing those visiting the longest.

However, if you traveled far or did not travel all that much to the facility, sometimes the staff can make exceptions for you to stay and visit a bit longer.

When Do Inmates Have Phone Access?

The Downstate Correctional Facility wants the inmates to stay in contact with their families. You can always keep in touch by telephone calls. Inmates can call home as long as they have money in their commissary account to purchase calling cards.

Inmates who do not have money in their commissary accounts will not get the chance to call home. Inmates are also not allowed to call other inmates either.

Inmate Lookup

Since the Downstate Correctional Facility is a state-mandated correctional center, the NYDOC has the official inmate list. The inmate list is available on the NYDOC website or by clicking here. This will give you the inmate’s information that is public record.

Where to Send Money From?

The quickest way to get funds to an inmate who is housed in the Downstate Correctional Facility is to send money through Western Union or MoneyGram. However, when you send money this way, you will incur a fee. The fees are the same as if you were sending money to someone, not in jail.

Now, suppose time is not an issue. In that case, you can always send money orders (you can get them at Western Union or MoneyGram) and send it to an address that the Downstate Correctional Facility states, and they can put money in the inmate’s account this way. This way does not cost you any other fees. But this process can take about 3 to 4 weeks.

How to Properly Address Mail?

When you send your letters to the Downstate Correctional Facility, you need to do some things ahead of time to make sure that the inmate gets your letter promptly.

Every piece of mail that you send to this facility should have a filled out envelope. This means in the upper-left-hand corner; you should have your return address and name. In the middle of the envelope, it should get facilities made out to the inmate with the inmate’s identification number and the facility’s mailing address should get facilities made out to the inmate in the middle of the envelope.

There should not be any drawings on the envelope, perfume, stickers, or staples. The envelope just needs that information and nothing more than that. If you fail to do so, the inmate may not get the letter, and the letter may get discarded.
