Types of Correctional Facilities in New Jersey

The New Jersey Department of Corrections oversees the records of those serving their time in a state prison of NJ. When you’re looking for an inmate in the state prison system, then you have come to the right place. NJDOC maintains these records, but if you’re looking for records of those in a city or county jail, then you will need to go to that individual website.

How to Find an Inmate

The NJ prison inmate search website is just a simple click away. If you’re looking for an inmate, then this is the right website. An inmate serving their time in a state prison in the New Jersey area will have their search information on the NJ Department of correction offender locator.

Before you can search this website, you do have to agree to a few disclaimers. However, once you agree, you can start your search. To find an offender, they have a massive list to help you choose from.

You can search using every bit of information about them, such as their name, number, eye color, hair color, and even race. You can search the depths of the state of New Jersey for the person you’re looking for. To go to this particular inmate search, go here.

How to Use the NJDOC Inmate Telephone System

After you have done an inmate search, you may be looking for a way to communicate with an inmate. Inmates are allowed to make phone calls while incarcerated at the New Jersey DOC. They cannot receive any phone calls; however, they have the option to either use collect calls or prepaid calls. This is simple, using the telephone system offered by NJDOC. The system is managed by GTL. An inmate can do two types of calls, which is collect calling or debit calling.

The collect calling is where they call you, and you pay for the call. Debit calling is where the inmate calls you and the money is debited from their account. You can choose which way is better to help you communicate with the inmate.

You can actually get a firsthand look at the phone system, right here. The website will give you all the information you need to contact the inmate via the phone system.

Inmates have a limitation for the number of people who can contact them, roughly ten on each of the inmate's call list. For security reasons, most inmates will have their calls monitored except for official legal calls.

How to Video Call, an Inmate

Thanks to technology, after you have done a prison search or done an inmate locator, you may be able to video conference with them. If for any reason you’re interested in this type of teleconferencing, you can learn all the information, right here.

Video conferencing may be easier than visitation. You don’t have to worry about the stress of driving to visit an inmate in prison. It can be easier for children as well. Just remember this is a good option for those who are looking to communicate with someone in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.

If you have the desire to lookup an inmate or do a search online for an inmate, know that the NJDOC holds their records if they are at a state level. Also, know, you must follow all rules in regards to calling or visiting inmates in the state’s prison system.

Sending Mail

If you want to send mail to an inmate at New JerseyDOC, format the mail as follows:

Inmate Name, SBI number, State Number
Facility name
PO Box or street address
City state zip code

Inmates at the jersey DOC security facilities’ are encouraged to correspond with their friends and loved ones. The facility allows inmates up to 80 stamps in their possession, with the liberty to send and receive as much mail as they want to.

If a friend or loved one wants to send a photo to an inmate to maybe remind them of home or show them how much their little one has grown, they will have to send in a 4" by 6" photo. Instant photos and Polaroid photos, any gang-like hand gestures, and tattoos are prohibited.

For security purposes, all incoming and outgoing mail will be inspected for a security breach, at any New Jersey DOC. If incoming mail is flagged for a security breach, it will either be confiscated or sent back. However, official mail will be opened in the presence of the inmate.

Ensure that while addressing the mail, you also add the return address if the mail needs to be sent back.

Sending Packages

If you plan to send a package to a New Jersey DOC facility, you have to adhere to certain rules. For one, inmates have a list of things they can receive from friends and loved ones. To get to understand this, you have to ensure to call the specific facility the inmate is housed in to find out.

However, inmates can also order books and magazines plus newspapers direct through reputable vendors like Amazon.com. All books sent to a New Jersey DOC facility are required to be paperback. They are also prohibited from having nudity, descriptive on making weapons, alcohol, or drugs. Apart from this, if any package shows or poses any risk to a New Jersey DOC facility, it will be confiscated.

If you decide to buy the inmate some books or publications from Amazon, ensure you send the inmates mailing address and include the inmate's names and ID number.

Sending Money

Friends and family have the liberty to send money to inmates at any New Jersey DOC facility into their commissary accounts. The inmate can use the money to purchase items they might need from the prison kiosk, including snacks, clothing, stamps, and stationery.

There are a couple of ways you can get money to an inmate's commissary account, including through the internet, mail, phone, or a walk-in. You will need the inmate's name and id to make a safe transaction and ensure the money goes to the right people.

If you use a walk in to deposit funds, all you have to do is walk into a money gram location and carry out the transaction. A flat fee of $8.95 will be charged for the transaction.

If you decide to use the internet and deposit the funds online, all you have to do is visit JPay.com and deposit it. The cost of the transaction here will range from between $3.95-$10.95. Of all the methods for depositing funds, this is the fastest way you can fund the inmate's account.

If you deposit the money through the phone, you will have to call JPay at 1-800-574-5729. You can use debit or credit cards, and you will be charged between $4 and $12.

You can deposit the money through the mail, as it is the cheapest option to get money to an inmate's commissary. JPay will not charge you to send money to an inmate, although it may take a bit longer to reach the facility.

Use the united postal money order and include the inmate's name and ID before sending the money in the mail.
