Potosi Correctional Center is a minimum, medium, and maximum security prison in Mineral Point, Missouri. The prison opened in 1989 and offers vocational programs, a commissary, visitations, and substances abuse programs that are detailed below. Potosi is designed to hold 800 inmates and is a mixed custody facility.  Potosi primarily holds individuals who have been sentenced to longer terms and also has death row inmates. A smaller number have shorter sentences. Potosi has executed all but one of the prisoners executed in Missouri since it’s opening. When it opened, Potosi had about 200 prisoners, and is currently at or near it’s 800 person capacity. The prison has several wings for different levels of custody that will also be discussed below. Potosi is otherwise considered a maximum security prison with a variety of custody and holding cells.  Special needs assignments are also available for certain inmates. Read below for more details about Potosi.

Inmate Search

People search for inmates for a variety of reasons, including finding out their current status or the crimes they are believed to have committed. Potosi Correctional Center does not have it’s own inmate search, though a  search of inmates can be conducted through the Missouri Department of Corrections search here.

Searches can be conducted using either the inmates Department of Correction’s number or first and last name. The search does not require a full name, so searching for a inmate like John Smith can be done by searching for “Jo” in the first name field and “Sm” in the last, though you’ll receive multiple results when you want one.

The search results offer you the inmate’s doc, Department of Corrections number, in many cases mugshots are available in addition to the charges against the inmate as well as location incarcerated and their common aliases.

Data appears to be updated once or twice per day, with once in the evening, in the event you are seeking someone who was recently transferred.

Visitation

First, visiting an inmate does first require approval from Potosi Correctional Center, and must be scheduled in advance. Applications may be submitted ahead of time through the application must be found by contacting the correctional center first.

Visitations can occur on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:30AM to 1:30PM and from 2:30PM to 6:30PM. The prison will offer strict regulations about what visitors can wear, including nothing too tight or revealing. During the pandemic, visitations were also limited to people 18 years or older.

Some levels are not allowed to have visitation as frequently as others. Visits are recorded unless the visit is by a legal representative who is discussing legal matters.

Programs and Rehab

As of now, the center holds 908 inmates with some expansion. A mental health wing has 46 beds and offers help for prisoners with mental health issues or developmental abilities that keeps them segregated from the regular population.

Inmates can take vocational classes to use skills within the prison and outside, including basic skills classes like janitorial, mechanical, and many other options. All offenders are offered the opportunity to earn a General Education Degree, or GED, with help from on site teachers and counselors.

GEDs are offered because the majority of prisoners have little to no education, which is often one of the reasons why they have committed crimes to be locked in prison.

Mental health professionals can also help prisoners understand the social skills and awareness necessary to maintain healthy relationships that don’t result in substance abuse or violent crimes that often lead to imprisonment. Substance abuse, theft, and other violent crimes are a leading cause of longer jail terms.

The purpose of the rehab programs offered at Potosi are to prepare prisoners for life after their sentence to and treat each other well while in the prison.

Death Row

As mentioned earlier, Potosi is among the only correctional centers in Missouri that executes prisoners. Initially, death row inmates had their own wing, with different segments that keep the minimum security inmates from medium security, max security, and close contact inmates. The prison gradually learned that most of the non-death row inmates were found guilty of similar crimes as non-death row and they now largely keep inmate types together as of 1991. Death row inmates are now referred to as Capital Punishment inmates, and they can access the law library, eat meals together, and get exercise in the courtyard.  With no serious issues happening between capital punishment inmates and regular, the prison decided to keep the groups together.

Sending Money

Most prisoners are Potosi are allowed to receive money to purchase items from the commissary, or buy phone time. If they live locally, visitors can deposit money through one of 15 kiosks in the prison lobby or use JPay to send to their prison account. While inmates will not receive cash directly, they do get to debit directly at the commissary. Clear limits on the amount sent or what the prison can buy are not clear and are likely subject to the prisoner’s level.

Money orders are allowed. There may be a fee for using systems like Jpay or money orders, but those fees are not paid to the prison. The commissary is required to use any profits to purchase educational materials for inmates.
