The Montgomery County Detention Center, also known as MCDC, is responsible for the intake as well as the processing of adult offenders. It currently has the capacity to hold a maximum of 200 inmates. Since the length of the stay for each inmate will vary, there are close to 13,000 offenders booked into this center each year.
This facility is unique in this area because it operates as the intake unit. This allows it to provide psychological screenings, risk assessment, and medical screening for all inmates. This helps staff to determine the right classification level for each inmate while also providing the right care, custody, and security for the first three days before their transfer over to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
The Public Defender and their offices will determine whether each offender is allowed to have legal representation or not during the jail bookings. The Inmate Services Intake Unit is responsible for taking care of the inmates, figuring out their immediate needs, what risk they are to themselves and to the other inmates, and finding the right management tools for each inmate.
Jail Bookings of Inmates
The Montgomery County Detention Center in Maryland strives to be more than just another prison. They want to make the experience unique for each inmate, giving them their own risk level and assessment when they enter. This can help them determine what plan is best to help the inmate rehabilitate and eventually be ready to re-enter society safely.
When an inmate comes to this facility, they will need to undergo an assessment by their Case Manager. This is done to look at the crime committed, the type of treatment the inmate will need, what activities they are allowed to do in the facility (this can change as the inmate responds to treatments and does well in the detention center), and what risk the inmate poses to themselves and to others around them.
The inmate will work with their Case Manager during their time in the detention center. The Case Manager will make sure that the inmate receives the right treatment options and can later ensure they progress to the right educational and technical skills to help them re-enter society later and even find a job at some point.

Sending Mail and Care Packages to an Inmate in Montgomery County Detention Center
Inmates are allowed to receive mail and care packages from family members. Care packages can include options like personal hygiene items, meats, chips, candies, and coffee. Always double-check with the facility to make sure an item is allowed since this list can occasionally change. Car packages can take between 10 to 21 days to reach the inmate so think about this before sending anything through.
When sending mail or a care package, you will need to have the inmate name and ID to ensure it goes to the right part of the facility and makes it to your inmate. Ask for this ID number and have it written clearly on the mail before sending.
