The Miami-Dade Department of Corrections operates the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. It is located at 7000 NW 41st Street in Miami, Florida. The office of the facility can be reached by calling 786-263-5341.
This center houses an average of nine hundred individuals. On average, a detainee stays at the facility for one year while they are waiting for either a trial or sentencing. An overwhelming majority of the individuals booked into this medium-security facility are either transferred after a trial or released. Some individuals booked at this center might eventually qualify for the Miami-Dade DOC Home Arrest program.
Miami Dade County Correction’s mission is to prioritize the rehabilitation of the over 4,000 inmates they work with each year. The goal is to reduce re-entry into the system by providing support and mental health treatment whenever necessary.
Miami Dade Inmate Search
An inmate being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center or any other facility in the Miami Dade network can be found by running an offender search. The Department of Corrections offers public access to the search database through an online search tool. This tool shows where each inmate is currently being held, their charges, and a current mugshot. In addition, all of an inmate’s corrections and rehabilitation records are also made available upon request. These can not be accessed directly online. Instead, anyone can file a public records request form to gain access to the records. Anyone who requests these records should be aware that various fees will be charged depending on the specifics of the requested information.
Staying in Touch
Inmates are allowed to receive mail while at the prison. It must be addressed to the inmate with a full name and their inmate number, include a return address, and be delivered by the United States Postal Service. Mail will be searched before it is allowed into the prison. There are several items that may not be sent through the mail:
- Letters not written on plain white paper
- Inappropriate pictures or polaroid photos
- Postcards or greeting cards
- Newspaper or magazine clippings
- Hardcover books
- Anything sexual or suggestive in nature
Incoming calls are not allowed at the facility. An online account can be set up to enable the prisoner to call specific phone numbers from a pre-paid calling card. Funds can be added to this account online by setting up an account.
Visitation
Currently, only video visitation is allowed at the facility. Friends and family wishing to visit a prisoner must create an account before scheduling a visit. Only visitors that have been approved by the prison staff and placed on the approved visitor’s list will be allowed to create an account. After the account is created and approved, visits can be scheduled directly from that account.
Attorneys or other individuals needing to visit the inmate for business-related reasons must first fill out an application for video visitation. The completed application can be emailed to [email protected]. After the administration approves this application, they can then create an account with Tel Link.
Making a Deposit
Each inmate at the jail has a trust account set up immediately when booked into the prison. This fund is used to pay legal and processing fees and to purchase items from the commissary. It is also used for non-emergency medical treatment.
Friends and family can make deposits into the trust account online. The jail has a kiosk in the lobby to accept cash deposits. Finally, deposits can be made over the phone by calling 1-866-232-1899. Anyone who makes a deposit should be aware that half of all deposits are applied to outstanding debt.
Commissary
This facility allows family or friends to order and send commissary items to their loved ones. The iCare Website allows individuals to shop for a prisoner and then pay for things online. All that is needed to use the website is the inmate’s last name or their inmate number.
Monitored Release Program
To prevent jail populations from becoming unmanageable, Miami-Dade County Corrections has developed a monitored release program (or house arrest program) for some eligible individuals. Both pre-trial detainees and some previously sentenced inmates who meet specific conditions might qualify for the program.
To be eligible for monitored release or house arrest, inmates must submit to a full background check and also meet each of the following criteria:
- Must allow weekly random visits with the case manager, who will check to ensure all court-ordered requirements remain in place.
- May have to remain in their residence unless they have been given permission to leave. Permission is needed for both routine tasks (such as work) and occasional tasks.
- May have to abide by a curfew that determines when they may leave their residence or when they must return to it.
- Must agree to attend counseling sessions or any other mental health treatments ordered by the judge.
- May have to maintain employment.
- May have to agree to the use of a GPS tracking device such as an ankle monitor.
Some individuals may be placed directly into the House Arrest program by the 11th Judicial Court. Some previously sentenced inmates may also qualify for the program. Those prisoners will be selected by the House Arrest staff and must then go through an extensive interview and approval process. The goal of this program is to reduce re-entry into the corrections system by giving detainees an opportunity to maintain ties or reconnect with family before they fully transition back to the greater community.
